I went to see the AD and it didn't go so well
I went to an AD in Depford, about forty minutes drive from me, on Saturday. After going back and forth with the salesMAN ( figures, no cleavage for me) and getting nowhere I met with the manager. He explained that Rolex was issuing a price increase within the next month or so. Therefor, he would not reduce the list price at all. He said that paying list price now would actually be the same as getting nearly eight percent off of a purchase in the next several weeks.
My GMT was right there in front of me and boy was it beautiful. I could practically hear it screaming my name and telling me to pay the guy already and get it out of that lonely case. I've bought a NIB Rolex in the past and right away the AD was willing to work with me. Anyway, I wanted to check with you guys and see if this price increase is B/S or not and whether or not you would pay asking price or keep shopping. |

There is talk of a price hike in February CJ. I don't personally know if it's real, but who does? Your AD may have heard the same rumor and is employing this very old sales tactic which to my mind is hackneyed and a bit impolite to someone who wants to trade his hard earned cash for goods. If I were you I'd shop elsewhere.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try a couple of more places on Tuesday, actually one store but two different branches, and see how I do. I gotta tell ya, it's going to be hard walking out again and leaving my honey behind though.
I'd love to find out if this impending price increase is genuine or not. I'm going to feel pretty stupid if I end up paying four to five hundred dollars more for the same watch for dragging my feet. Anyway, as soon as I get her home I'll try and post some pics. I'm not one of those computer friendly guys, I may end up having to tell you how it looks HA-HA |

We have great cleavage in Atlantic City too. The only problem is, it cost alot more than eight percent, there is never a discount and when you wake up you no longer own a Rolex. |

Yeah!
Tell me about it. That whole fulfillment from helping other S**T went out the window after my first year at rookie pay on midnights. |

Am I missing something here?
CJ, you're planning to buy the watch now, right? Why should next month's prices affect what you pay today? As far as I can tell, your AD's trying to punish you for buying a watch so close to the POSSIBLE increase in prices. I don't know about you, but common sense would lead me to tell this guy, "You obviously don't wish to have my business, so I'll take it somewhere else, thank you very much".

Damn right, JJ - Hour Glass in Singapore tried the same kind of crap with me and I told them exactly where to stick it. In fact, Watch Palace on the other end of the building (literally 30 seconds' walk away) gave me a $630 discount.
Never, EVER let some slick-talking, scum-sucking, bottom-feeding shyster give you this highfaluting tripe in order to rip you off. You're better off without the GMT for the while that it takes to find someone who won't try to sell you a goddamn bridge instead.

I've bought only one in the past and the AD worked with me right away. I went to that AD first. He did'nt mention the price increase nor did he appear to be unwilling to negotiate, unfortunately, he did'nt have a red and black bezel GMT either. The AD I mentioned in this post was so dead set against any negotiation that I was'nt sure if it was common for negotiation to cease in the advent of a pending price increase or if it was just a sales tactic. Nonetheless,I did'nt feel comfortable making that purchase at all.So here I sit without the GMT. Hopefully the next AD works out better. I wanted to be sure That I did'nt walk out on an appropriate price and then end up paying more if this alleged price increase were to go into affect. Thanks for the advise |

CJ, find an honest dealer, get the GMT, go back to the first schmuck and tell him what he missed. Then tell him you're relating your story to any potential buyer who will listen.

All the best, CJ (and welcome aboard, by the way!), and kick whoever's butt till you get as close as you can to 20% off - as it is 17% is not unheard of!

Exactly CJ. Find an AD that will work with you and isn't such a dink. You'll know when you find one. They'll make you smile just as much as the watch.

CJ the guys are right, if the AD you just went to is unwilling to work with you NOW means to me he (the dealer) wants top dollar. Let him stick his nose up at you, you go to another AD find your watch for the price you want to pay and take it back and push it up his nose.

And CJ, the problem you may be running into is that the AD is in AC. How many ADs in casino land do you know are willing to deal? They don't need to. Go a bit further afield and try an AD outside the AC area. That might work a bit better.

I don't think 17% - 20% is realistic on any sports model in this country......
I would go to another dealer, or buy mint pre-owned and save even more $$$. |

CJ ..... email me at rev@rolexforums.com . I have a AD in N. Jersey that will work with you and he is a GREAT guy. My cousing has been buying from him for 20+ years and I bought my Rolex from him and I live in FL.
It's no guarantee, but I'd give him a shot. |

CJ, best of luck on your hunt to find the GMT at a reasonable price, believe me we all understand.
Your story isn't all that uncommon. In 2004 I bought a Rolex at the local AD and was told the exact same thing when I asked for a discount, it was the buy it now and theres your discount or wait a few months and you'll pay more. I ended up buying it now before the price increase as all the other ADs in my area useed the same sales tactic, at the time it seemed they were all working together or something, I felt like they were calling each other on the phone before I got to their stores cause they all used the price increase line on me. I do know there are some ADs in other states that will discount and you also avoid sales tax, but in my case I wanted to buy it locally just incase there was a problem and I needed service. Anyway it seems these prices increases are the real deal cause two months later the model I bought increased by $400 and just to test the theroy I returned to one of ADs and inquired about the same watch and they wouldn't budge from the new retail price and offered no discount. My advice would be like the others said try a few more ADs and then go ahead and get the watch you want before the impending increase. |
