Rolex DayDate 40 to Dominican Republic?
Hey all,
Tomorrow I’m going on vacation for a week in the Dominican Republic. We are not planning on leaving the resort. Is it safe to wear my Daydate there? I don’t know if there’s any probability for theft even in the airport if I was ever asked to take it out and put it through the scanner (which I probably wouldn’t anyway). My only other concern which isn’t nearly as much of a concern as theft is taking it to the beach everyday and it getting dirty in the sand. Any tips or advice would be appreciated! |

New York is probably less safe than a resort. Do you wear your Rolex outside of the house?
Your hotel room has a sink. |

By asking you answered your own question.
The country has so much more to offer than only staying in a resort. If you change your mind good luck arguing with airport security

I've worked & vacationed in the Dominican Republic and never felt unsafe. Although seeing a pickup truck in every hotel parking lot w/ a security man holding a machine gun was a bit unnerving.
You have to go with your own gut. Wearing a solid gold Rolex to any island is beyond my comfort level. I'd prefer to wear something that would allow me to enjoy the most out of the vacation. dP

while on holiday any watch would be low on my priority to take.

Personally I would take it if not leaving the resort but it wouldn’t be leaving my wrist.
If leaving the resort I’d probably still take it. I find carrying a wrist sweat band you can slip over your watch a handy accessory abroad. Some people can’t pull it off though. |

So some people are saying yes, some no..
How likely is it for airport employees to steal a watch? Or a chain also? I am also debating bringing my diamond tennis chain.. |

I’ve been to DR many many times. Always wore a Pam submersible in the resorts and out in town with no worries.
However, I wouldn’t wear a Gold Rolex, especially YG.

I have been to a few all-inclusive resorts in the DR and felt safer to wear the watch. There is a safe in the room, so use it. If you do venture outside of the resort, and I am not sure what there is to do outside of the resort, leave it in the safe.

That should be fine. Most the of time we stayed at the resorts but did go out to the local area. Never had a problem.
What resort area?

The roads to and from the airport are where you’ll feel unsafe, it won’t be wearing your watch.
I’ve been there dozens of times (SDQ or STI) and still amazed at how we avoided accidents. Either with motorcycles splitting lanes-passenger on back-or passing on 2 lane roads, threading the needle with moments to spare. It’s a hair raising experience. Once you get to the resort, though, it’s fairly safe. My experience is that most resorts are compounds. Just never ever drink the tapwater, only bottled. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I’d leave the gold watch and diamond bracelet at home. Go and enjoy your vacation. Why take something that you are going to be looking over shoulder about?

Unless you’re Dominican I’d say hard pass. Why worry about a silly watch when enjoying presidentes on the beach.

Wear something water resistant in SS with no worries. Gritty in the sand and PM do go together well.

I live in the DR and wouldn’t consider wearing any Rolex in the world outside your resort. No need to take and the safe in the room isn’t.
My advice……Don’t flaunt and be generous to the locals. |

Took a full gold GMT2 when I was in my early 20s about 10,15 years ago. Me and my mates ended up going to some local party in a bar club thing outside the resort, and I did feel a bit stupid and to be honest scared walking along wearing it, like asking for trouble given its value compared to general lack of wealth out there and we had a 30 minute walk along dark roads home as we couldn’t find a taxi. Was not that good, but fortunately didn’t get unlucky.
Also watch out for food poisoning which got me and ruined a few days, hopefully it’s better now, but avoid prepared fruit and tap water in particular. |

I think you hit the mark with "Don't flaunt". It's not classy nor wise IMO to inspire envy as a guest in a place that struggles economically. |

Vacationed in the Dominican Republic before and just my opinion, I'd leave the watch at home. One less thing to worry about.

Leave the watch at home, or take it with, but get out and explore the DR, experience their culture and meet some amazing locals

I would not take an expensive watch. One more thing to have to worry about. Seiko or G-Shock would work for me.
