Play on hands - how do you adjust the time?

Which way do you set the time when you set your watch? Do you move the minute hand "forward" towards the correct minute or do you adjust it "backwards"? In a new watch there is not as much play as in some older watch I have. I move it forward, to have the play on the "back side of the gears". Maybe its just a weird, wrong idea, and maybe the running of the watch removes the play. but curious what you do?

There's always some minor slop (gear backlash) in the wheel train when moving the minute hand back & forth, so to set the starting position accurately to match the second hand I always move the hand forward in the direction of movement to my target setting.

For a machine, to minimize initial lash tolerance or avoid start-up shock, you move the gear in the direction of travel initially, then back it into contact with the driving gear. This way the machine does not free-travel until the lash is taken up. Sometimes that is important.

A watch will work the same way if you think that this would be important to you. Probably only takes a fraction of a second for a watch gear train to take up all the slack once it starts so the benefit would be minimal. Since you can't change or lock the lash at some optimal clearance it won't make a difference in operation.

Having the play on one side or the other when it isn't running is irrelevant. Once it starts running all of the slack/lash is taken up because it is a continuous contact drive.

Some folks like to fiddle though.... go for it if you want

Ok. I'm one of those nuts that like the seconds and minutes hands to be in sync. So the minute hand aligned on the minute marker when the seconds hand is at 12. The best way I have found to do this is, with the watch hacked... Advance the minute hand just past the minute marker. Back it up slightly until it aligns with the minute marker. Then, turn the crown maybe 1/8 to take up lash/slack. Depress crown. I only need to do this when daylight savings changes. Usually don't bother lining them up that precisely when I change time zones during travel. But will when I return home. Yeah, my OCD thing.

My Rolex with 32xx movement have terrible tolerances in the hand stack and is too much effort to get perfectly set… no issues with 31 series nor the much older 15 series. I usually set it forward or backwards whichever works

I’ve always set my watches going forward because that’s the way my dad taught me to around 1967.

I’ve had a couple of older Rolex with driveline lash, for instance with my 14060m to get the second hand to align with the minute hand I had to start the second hand at 49 seconds to take up the lash with the minute hand set perfectly on the minute. My 116600 behaves similarly. I will try Tools suggestion to move the hand beyond the correct time and then back it into place.

I was thinking the same. Geez! I just set the time. Only when I occasionally test the accuracy do I mess with hacking. Even then, I do have a Timegrapher, so it’s not really necessary.

I set the time and hack it 15 seconds slow, as they are all a few seconds fast a day.

I generally wear them days at a time in a pairing.

Well, our sincerest apologies for responding to the OP..
Many do expect a bit more out of a $15k watch when it comes to accuracy imho.

I go forwards and if I overshoot I come back a little then forward again, sometimes there’s a bit more or less slack to make up until I’m satisfied.

Backlash in a new watch is so minimal. Sneak up on the minute marker till it’s perfect with the seconds hacked and it will read as it is supposed to.

Thank god my life was never ran to the exact second and in over 50 years of owning and wearing Rolex watch in work or play how ever I set the watch never was late for appointments or missed any form of transport.
