Thinking of selling my Rolex
I got my Sub a couple months ago from an AD and thinking of selling. I like the watch but main reason is I don’t feel comfortable wearing it. I don’t like to wear it around work, friends, or family because it feels like I’m showing other people up. I prefer to be more under the radar. Ive only been wearing it around my house, when I’m alone running errands around town, or date nights.
Selling it would open up funds for me to buy watches where I won’t feel that way (plus pocket a few grand). Current collection is Sub, quartz Grand Seiko, and Seiko dive watch. Once sold I’m thinking my new collection would be IWC Mark XX, Longines dress watch, and Seiko dive. Thoughts on me selling the Rolex? |

You have to do what you feel is right.
I wear what I like and really don't care what others think. Rarely has anyone ever commented, I doubt that most of these people even look at what you are wearing.

If you’re not comfortable wearing it then let it go ..

Stop apologizing for doing well. Wear it and enjoy or sell it.

You should wear what you want and not worry about what others think. They aren't living your life. However, if you will enjoy one of those other pieces or can put the money to good use otherwise then that may be the correct choice for you. Which sub model is it?

I sold my explorer a while ago… I wanted a tool watch and it felt more like jewelry. I’ve been considering a 5 digit sub/explorer. Recently picked up a Big pilot 43 … totally different vibe, much more utilitarian. It’s somehow large and under the radar all at the same time.

You shouldn't worry about what others think about what your wearing. It's your life not theirs. However, if you feel that you will enjoy one of those other pieces better then it could be a good move to make.

We are all into watches. In reality most people have no idea that you are wearing a Rolex, Patek, AP,...or fill in the brand. Having said that if it makes you feel uncomfortable then find a watch you love to wear everywhere. Good luck

Not sure. Most people will have no clue about Patek, AP, Omega, any other bigger or smaller brand. But they will know Rolex and many will have a negative association around that brand name. Gotta watch that. You wouldn’t want to roll into the corporate parking lot with a used 911 either - just to park it next to your boss’ old Ford Explorer.

I agree with Slackergirl: no one is impressed by what's on your wrist. Wear it and enjoy it. If anyone notices then they'll respect your tasted in good watches.

Few people notice my watches. Wear what you like. But if the Sub makes you uncomfortable, sell it. But remember, you earned it. Any jealous people can earn one themselves.

I sold my Blue gold sub 2 months ago , it looked too big and flash on my 61/2+ inch wrist to the extent I was covering with my sleeve . I bought a Vacheron Traditionnelle ( green dial ) and love it , whilst a gorgeous looking watch it suits me as it flies under radar

A Sub is the ideal daily in my opinion. You're overthinking it but if you can't come to grips with it then sell it.
Like Brian said, it'll likely lead to regret.. |

A lot of people don't even notice I have a rolex on.. unless they are watch people and/or I have mentioned it. One of the keys is to just wear it and not mentioned you even got it. Enjoy it!
I got my first Rolex as a gift from my wife over 20 years ago.. it has quite a history with me and I used to wear it every day and did so for almost 15 years (before I started rotating in my Apple watch). During that time, my Rolex became part of me and the memories I have with it are priceless. At this stage in my life, I'm glad I brought it along for the ride. If I had been worried about what anyone else thought, it would have ruined the relationship I developed with it and the history I created with it. It's truly special to me at this point. Recently, I have been trying to get another from a few AD's.. and it's super frustrating, but I feel once (or should I say "IF") I do get a second one, it will be special also. I know guys that only get one chance at a brand new Rolex from an AD, so you might be giving up the experience and specialness of obtaining it like you did. But of course, if ownership creates unconfortable situations and feedback, then I understand. But if it was THE watch I wanted and the one I wanted to keep forever, I wouldn't get rid of it.. just wear it at more specific times where it didn't elicit the negative feelings. Best of luck to you.. :) |

Sell it and buy something which you will wear without being afraid and does make you happy.
Personally I don’t understand your reasoning. A Sub is not exactly a ridiculously expensive bling watch. Many of those around in the wild. Some like to spent money on cars, boats, hunting, holidays and others buy a nice watch. Why should you feel that you have to justify owning a Rolex.

But people will spend over $1K/year on one Starbucks every morning en route to work, over $200/month or more eating junk food lunch out, etc. I won't even go into mood altering substances. Some just have a different view on what constitutes frivolous spending.

Having a Rolex can draw attention, replacing it with a 4-5k IWC won't change much imho. Just buy what makes you happy. |
