I just received the "new to me" 18238 that I purchased. Everything looks good, except when I set the time as I wind the hands there seems to be a "skip" in the winding stem/crown. I am assuming this is not normal. The day and date set just fine. The time sets fine it just has this "skip".

I will take this to my local watchmaker to look at but any idea as to what I should be looking at?

Do you mean when you are setting the time the minute hand does not move proportionality to the amount you are turning the crown? Like you turn the crown and the minute hand does not move for a second?

That sounds about right and it almost seems like there is a bit of a dragging feel when I do it and it happens with each complet rotation of the minute hand.

This is the first DD I have owned, so I didn't now if that is normal for this model. All my other models are so smooth, but they are only single quicksets...

I have determined that this isn't normal, so I will take it to a watchmaker next week, but any ideas on what is causing this? Major? Minor?

Looks to me like something is out of alignment in the winding stem or one of the drive gears.
Time for a visit to your watchmaker IMO.

How is it when you WIND it? Does it wind smoothly or does it skip also?

Oh ya, I definitely see the problem now, but still have no idea whats wrong with it

. It could just need a simple cleaning and oiling or more likely needs a new part. Either way I couldn't imagine it costing more than a couple hundred dollars to fix.

Well, now that I am playing with it, it has started to skip more so I'm keeping my hands off of it until I can get it serviced. I think I will be heading to the Dallas RSC on Tuesday and see what they say about it.

If you are sending it to Rolex I take back my couple hundred estimate

. All in all its a good idea if it hasn't been sent in for service in a lot of years. If it needs a new part they wont charge you much for the individual part, but they will probably make you do a full service and its gonna be around $800.00 or so.

If you take it to Rolex they are gonna make you fully service it 750 bucks. If you take it to an independent watch maker they may just fix whats broke or misaligned and you will get by without a service. Either one of them can put the brush finish back on the lugs......

One of the intermedaiate setting wheels has broken teeth, that's why it skips.
The broken teeth are wandering in the movement, so it'll need a complete service if you don't want any problems in the near future.

Thank you. I will make sure the seller and I can work out the repairs or it will go back and I'll start the search over for another watch.

Thank you. It will be going to the RSC for repair and service. That should make it like new.

Thanks for all the feedback. I took it to Bob Ridley today and it is a broken setting wheel. It actually has 3 broken teeth and he will be doing a complete service and repair the broken parts (as well as a few other things).

I posted my experience with Bob earlier on this forum for anyone interested.

Here's a photo of the broken wheel with one of the broken teeth sitting on the right side.

You'll have to change the intermediate setting wheel and most likely the slide pinion that it meshes with and possibly more. Rik
