Going backwards?
So as long as I can remember, I have been one of those Rolex or nothing type people when it came to luxury watches. Cared nothing about any other brands..... However, during the past six months I have become much more interested in Tudor and Omega. Even bought my first Tudor from a Tudor AD in Italy a few months ago.
This weekend went to the local Tudor AD and tried on a bunch of watches. Pelagos FXD, Black Bay 925, Black Bay 41, BiMetal GMT, and a few others. Went across the street to the Omega AD and tried on a couple watches there too. So I believe most people look at these brands before the graduate to Rolex. Seems like I am going backwards.... maybe I am broken. Not sure if this is normal..... Anyone else? |

The journey to Seiko can be a long one, but it looks like you're halfway there

If you care about the monetary value then yeah you’re going backwards. You can buy a grand seiko for cheaper than a Rolex which is way more advanced as far as movement and finishing… it’s cheaper but going forward in many ways. Stop basing your position on the price and buy what you want to wear! That’s what watch collecting is about.
People who own Patek feel the same way about buying a Rolex… perspective |

My two last watches were a Tudor BB 41mm and a Grand Seiko Diver. I’m enjoying both very much. Perhaps the only quirkiness here is the Grand Seiko bracelet philosophy, which leaves a bit to be desired.

I've been looking at both of the same brands lately as well. Not a step back at all. It's part of the hobby.

I started w/ Patek, then Rolex, then Tudor, and then Seiko. Like Brian and many others have stated above, as a watch enthusiast I've never considered my journey as going backwards. It's only gotten better w/ time.

How does one define 'normal'? We each have our journey as we very briefly travel through space and time. That's what makes this world a rich tapestry of fables and fun.
BTW, went from business Patek Philippe while slaving / wearing a Monkey Suit ... to retiring happily on the beach watching sunsets enjoying Rolex. Now it's time for the real fun! MB&F and beyond! It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. Enjoy your time

Depending on which Omega you were looking at- I wouldn't consider that a step back from a comparable Rolex at all. Omega is making some cool pieces

Going “backwards” certainly is nice. Because there are many that got “forwards” in price too—and that can get super costly.
Agree with others—nice to have some diversity in a collection. But I also get that many people like only Rolex, and nothing wrong with that either. |

I can understand your sentiments. However, this should not be looked at as a binary decision; buying another brand does not equate to abandoning Rolex. You can do both - experience other brands without tarnishing your enthusiasm for Rolex watches.

There’s no backwards. Only different.
Two of my favourites PS. One is highly sought after and the other is a Rolex Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It’s very easy to be enamoured only by Rolex, and there’s nothing wrong with that, the brand is such a strong brand and following, with great dependable watches ..
Also when you look at other brands there’s so much more out there to chose from and of course other brands easier accessible …
