Food for Thought

In the dark of night, think of this. When you pass on, your offspring that were born and raised in the Digital age and just Love Apple Watches might sell your White Dial Daytona to a Grey Dealer at a Flea Market while passing through Georgia to meet Friends near Disney World and Vacation in Florida.

I have a great relationship with my kids and they understand my passion for my watches. I'm fairly confident they wouldn't sell "dad's" watches.

No matter the value methinks it comes down to the personal relationship and memories.

At the end of the day, it’s just a watch. An expensive watch, but just a watch.

If it happens I would be dead and gone anyway, I wouldn’t care or know that any of these things happened

I couldn't care less! I buy my watches for me and not for anyone else because there is always a possibility that your kids will not appreciate you. Sucks but it happens.

On a side note, I've always murmured the Patek ads should read "You don't own a Patek Phillipe, you merely look after it for your spoiled child!".

I'm 18, and I can confidently say that over 50% of people my age (from experience) actually wear a watch and appreciate them, perhaps not to the level of Rolex - but still the interest is there for a quality time piece.

Who cares, when I'm dead, I'm dead. They can do whatever they like if I ever do have children.

End of the day they are lumps of metal, it's only US that assign them value.

Engrave the caseback with, "Don't sell this cheaply, it's expensive."

I handed on my white face steel Daytona to my son on Christmas Day 2017 to his great surprise. When I die he will get my Daytona Ceramic.. white face and if he sells them to a flea market I shall come back and haunt him.

When I go ...
I just hope my wife / kid doesn't sell my watches for the price I told them I bought them for.

I think in a lot of instances the “buying this to pass down to my kids” is just a way to justify buying a watch to our wives and ourselves. When I am dead they can do what they like. Hopefully I can indoctrinate at least one of my sons well enough to want to keep them though....

This is actually also what I think. Better write down how much it is worth too.

Quality will always prevail!!
People still appreciate good painting last despite the digital photography technology
People go for “class” over accuracy. In the 80s when quartz with better accuracy was common, rolex survived.
I have my kids appreciate what I have and take the time to explain why a $12,000 watch that’s not as accurate as an Apple Watch is better in craftsmanship and a piece of art

Our kids will remember what we teach them and I hope to pass my collection on to my kids that they cherish and value for decades to come!

Can tell them the value of the watch has doubled or tripled since the time you bought it. It's a Rolex

This is true. Mechanical watches became an anachronism at the invention of the quartz watch. Those that opt for an Apple Watch as their only watch were most likely quartz wearers. I would argue an Apple Watch is the quartz watch makers version of the quartz crises that mechanical watches faced. The difference is that type of watch wearer has no reason to go back to quartz other than fashion.

That could certainly happen. I would add, however, that it is our responsibility as parents to make sure our wills are updated, our affairs are in order, and that all concerned understand the value of any possessions that are to be inherited.

Trying to navigate settling an estate is hard enough, but if there is at least a clear picture of what everything is worth, then it becomes a much more manageable task.

Now, if my kids want to take a $20k watch and sell it at a flea market, that's up to them. That is a decision that they will have to live with, not me...pretty sure it won't affect me in the slightest at that point.

Ironically, as much as I cherish my Rolex I worked in the Semiconductor business for twenty Years and at one point we made Digital Watch circuits for "Accutron" now owned by Citizen. We were pushed out of the Digital Watch business by the Japanese. Now the Koreans are pushing the Japanese. Everyone is now pushed by the Chinese. I have never owned a Digital Watch. You can not "See" the Quality of a Micro Chip like you can a Beautiful mechanical watch.

Nope, not if it was their dads watch and they don’t hate you

Mine will be left in the inheritance. Let's hope they will cherish them as much as I do. Anyway they know my passion for watches very well. And hopefully they will handle them with respect.

off topic, but im going to be buried with at least one watch that my kids don't get... that way in 1000 years when an archaeologist finds my "tomb" they will think i was super important. The tomb is happening and its going to be in middle of nowhere just to confuse them further

If you don't trust your kids with your watches, that is always an option

there is the bog man, im going to be the watch man. The bog man was famous for being preserved in a swamp, but he didn't really have any cool stuff.
