What is a “Tropic” crystal?
I’ve seen this description used widely but what is it exactly? Is it a brand, model, nickname?
Top hat, dome, super dome but tropic? Sent from my cracked, broken hand wound phone. IG @morning_tundra |

I thought it was somehow related to the curvature of the earth as at the tropic north and tropic south, cancer and capricorn. Just imagery.

And then there are 16's, 17's 19's, and so on, and Domes and Super Domes
not to be confused with tropical dials....

I just think it is what they were called. Tropic 19 (t19) and tropic 127 (t127) are names of the different plastic crystals. Regardless of shape and style.

That's an official Rolex Term. Unlike many of the other terms we use...that one is the actual Rolex designation for crystals that are fit over a flange on the case and sandwiched between that and the bezel withOUT a magnifier. The magnifier crystals are designated also officially by Rolex as Cyclops.

Topic resurrection....
I've been considering this question in another topic and posted this as a possible reason. Happy to be corrected. "I'm wondering if in past decades the non cyclops was thought a necessity in tropical or hot regions so the cyclops did not concentrate the intense sunlight and cause damage to the dial? Just an uninformed thought." |
