Need help identifying father's Rolex

Hope the experts on the forum can help me out.

My father is getting advanced in age and wants to pass down to me a Rolex that he has kept in a safe for years He bought this watch in Taiwan in the 80s when he achieved success in business and immigrated to the U.S.

I am not familiar with the Datejust line at all and tried to Google image search to learn more about the watch. However, I can't seem to find a Datejust model with the "Rolex script" on the 6'o clock location. I wonder if it's just an aftermarket diamond bezel? My father is not a watch guy so he couldn't tell me more than it's a gold Rolex Datejust with diamonds...

Lot of aftermarket parts and work I think. Remove the bracelet and the numbers which will be on the case will give some answers

Nice !

I think you have a typo with the Ref number (18138), which is for a Day-Date.

The ‘Rolex sign’ are calles plaques. They are very nice indeed. Not sure if the dial is original. Let us know if you have more information on the originality, nice to learn.

I agree…
This looks original and may actually be a CROWN COLLECTION 18k Datejust.
But I though they only did this in men and ladies Presidents?
18138 is correct for a President but for a 36mm Datejust not sure.
The case number on it would be interesting for sure.
But still is a nice looking watch...

Here’s a few links for comparison.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread.

I was finally able to get the watch to a watch maker for a service and got the model and serial number while the watch was being disassembled.

Model number: 68158
Serial number: 963XXXX

It is a mid-size (31mm) Datejust from the 80s. My father is absolutely positive that the diamonds on the dial, bezel and lugs are factory set.

Can anyone more knowledgeable tell me more about the watch? Is it a Crown Collection model?

Yes, the 68158 reference makes sense. It is a ladies mid-size watch. They should be factory set diamonds on the dial, bezel and lugs. Im sure you want to get it insured since it is a family heirloom. I have looked at a few sold auction records and this watch seems to sell for an average price of about $14,000 as a naked watch and a bit more with papers. I would insure it for $20,000. Have a competent watch maker clean it and service it and enjoy it for another 50 years.
