Trade DJ41 for...

Would anyone trade a DJ41 fluted blue dial for a Lange white gold 1815 Up / Down? Price would include additional cash to seller.

This would be the "dress" watch in my small collection which includes a Rolex ceramic sub and an Omega Speedmaster white dial Tokyo 2020.

Thoughts?

I'd consider it, depending upon the additional cash to the seller.

I'd prefer a Lange over a DJ, yes.

That Lange is beautiful. I personally would prefer the Lange over a DJ 41 for the dress watch slot. I find the DJ 41 too big and chunky for a dress watch and prefer the 36mm version, especially since you already have a 41 mm Sub.

The 1815 is obviously a superior watch, beautiful too. You will probably need to put significant cash on top. At best, you're getting $10K for the DJ, which would be about $14K out of pocket for you.

The DJ is robust and cost effective/easy to maintain. The ALS is neither of those. Is it really worth it? Do you dress up that often to need a dress watch like that? I personally wouldn't do it, but that's up to you to decide.

I'm guessing $14K is a good ballpark figure.

By "dress" I don't necessarily mean only suit and tie - would probably were it anytime smart casual is called for.

Seller is asking $24K. If I decided to pull the trigger I would ask $10K for my trade. I think that is in the ballpark for consideration.

Considering that you have your Sub I would 100% make that move.
ALS is next level if looking for a dress watch.

Perhaps I’m in the minority here, but I wouldn’t do it. I recognize that the Lange is technically a superior watch, but I personally don’t see too many situations where I’d wear it. People love to call the DJ a “dress watch,” but at the end of the day it looks great whether you’re wearing a suit or casual weekend wear. The “dress” moniker is silly and outdated IMO. But the Lange truly does strike me as a dress watch l, and I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable wearing it with jeans and a tee shirt (where the DJ still works great), for example.

If you sell it on your own, then yes if you are bored. I'd just buy the Lange when you are ready, as you probably just bought the DJ

Lange is getting more hype than ever these days, deservedly so. Having checked most of the Rolex boxes myself, I think a lot about adding Lange at the expense of trading in my Datejust 41. However, I'm always held back and it's a testament to the Datejust 41.

When would I wear the ALS?

What if it rains?

To the office? I ride my bike to work in San Francisco where the streets are a little worse for wear. Could I do it with the Lange? I am not sure. With the DJ? Absolutely.

On special occassions? I could wear the ALS to a wedding, but just as well the DJ. And if I'm doing something other than work, I'm likely with my toddler. Holding a toddler while wearing a Lange seems a poor decision. I can handle it if my kid spills on a Rolex, but can a Lange?

So in the end I decided to keep it Rolex Rolex Rolex. I am happy to hear counter arguments though for others who like to overthink this as much as I have and have come to a different conclusion!

In the end I prefer to wear Rolex, but if I'm holding a loupe or looking at photos it's ALS every time.

Great questions. Maybe I am over simplifying it - but I would anticipate wearing the Lange just about anywhere that doesn't involve physical activity or water. Tonight I am going out to a Mexican restaurant with my wife - and I would definitely consider wearing that Lange with my shorts and polo shirt. I am in my early 60's if that makes any difference.

Lange is clearly playing in a different league but I would keep the DJ41.

I bought a Lange RG first and recently signed up for DJ41 in your setup. Lange is simply irreplaceable with a formal outfit, but it is also suitable for a denim blouse, polo shirt and sweater. DJ is more sporty, although it's not the same league ...

Mostly depends on what dollar amount the seller paid for this A Langhe Sohne. So even if seller agrees to $10k for your Rolex but doesn't budge on the $24k asking he can sell the DJ for $12k and make money from your DJ and whatever he earned by selling the ALS to you at 24K. If you really want the watch it doesn't much matter what you trade or pay for it, just get what you like and enjoy yourself.

Great pictures!

Thanks for sharing. I really like that strap with the RG.

The belt felt a little stiff at first, but after a week it settled well. It's of pretty good quality. The only remark to him is that this brown alligator darkened after six months, but still retained its comfort.

Let me add that this Lange is worth every dollar spent on him. At this price point, no other brand offers so much for "so little".

Lange makes good watches. But I wouldn’t trade a DJ for the 1815. You are losing a very versatile watch and on the other hand you have to top up quite a sum of money. The DJ can be worn as a dress watch or casually. Unless you have many watches the DJ would be better suited to your everyday needs.

Go ahead with the trade. the Rolex DJ41 is a great watch, but you will always be able to go back to the AD and pick one again (say if you had any rumors).
If ALS is your first high horological piece than by all means go ahead with the trade (but be careful that you are opening a whole can of goodies ).
Life won’t be the same after you try high horology

Calatrava is a very formal watch and the Lange 1815 U / D is casual - it will suit more outfits and occasions.
