Liven up your wrist by adding some greenery to the Submariner 16610

Hello TRF,

It's been a while since I posted something....

The last few months, I've been looking at ways to add a pop of color to my Sub.. I tried different straps using all kinds of color combinations and still didn't achieve what I desired...

I looked at the Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 and how people were swapping out bezels in order to achieve a different look... and asked myself what about the Sub? Can't we do the same thing? and it turns out the answer is yes...

So I sourced a Rolex Submariner green insert (the one used in the 16610LV) and got my watchmaker to swap out the original black one.

Now that's a pop of color

Anybody else did this with their Subs?

Not bad but personally I'd trade the LN towards a factory 16610LV.

Have to agree and today thats one of the main reasons the green LV insert is more expensive than the black insert. Those changing there inserts black to green and visa versa, and now genuine Rolex green LV aluminium inserts are only exchanged by RSC only to genuine LV watches.

I'm not really an expert, but what exactly makes it look like a "knock off"?

It's a Rolex with a green bezel from Rolex. Isn't that what an LV is?

Nice work, the green definitely makes the watch stand out. I am not a fan of the black-on-black subs; way too boring.

Well today genuine Rolex green inserts are only now available direct from RSC and they would not give one to a normal 16610LN sub only exchange now to genuine 16610LV watches. And all genuine Rolex 16610LV will have a maxi dial with larger hour markers.

Hi Peter, I had a feeling you might chime-in

I've seen/read the majority of your posts and I have to agree with most of your comments regarding the "internet/social media" hype generated over the green bezels and the flat 4 etc.... for the LV.

You're correct in saying that you no longer can source a genuine Rolex green insert from your AD, the only way is through RSC and that's if your Sub is genuine LV model only - you used to be able to back when this all started 2003/2010, it is no longer available to non LV Subs... I had this discussion with my AD/watchmaker and this information was indeed confirmed.

That said, what's wrong with sourcing a genuine Rolex green bezel insert (sold on Chrono24/Vintage watch dealers etc...) if that's what you fancy? I mean a great deal of people have all three color bezels for the GMT - isn't that a big no no from the purists if it's not the correct model?

Seems like the submariner is always the one to get hit hard when it comes to making some changes...

I just want to be clear before I get destroyed on TRF.

I'm a huge fan of originality and fully understand that the 16610 sub is meant to be on the black bezel insert. My original black bezel is slowly starting to fade and it's incredible to be honest - I wouldn't change it for the world since its original with the watch... I just wanted something to have some fun with during the spring and summer months...

Also, I get it when people are saying "just buy an LV if you want the green bezel" - because of the originality etc...

Here's the thing, I love the drilled lug holes and don't really enjoy the maxi dial so if I want the green bezel look what I'm I supposed to do except buy the LV insert no?

BTW I got the inspiration from a great TRF contributor/member @Jocke - many thanks my friend

I agree your watch, you do as you will with it. I'm quite guilty of switching out OEM parts on my watches.

As an LV owner I don't see anything wrong with it. If he was trying to sell it as an LV or pass it as an original LV then people should have a problem. OP seems like the type of person that if someone came up to him on the street and said to him "hey nice anniversary sub" he would quickly explain that it is not.

He's just trying something different.

Enjoy it!

You used an authentic Rolex part to create an inauthentic Rolex. Up to you if that's fine for you.

Looks fine, it’s even better that you are thrilled with the aesthetic. It’s not like you are trying to sell it as something that it is not. You do you.

Now you need two more things; maxi dial and larger hour and minute hands .. and then you’re complete and have a genuine LV unless you want to sell it .. looks nice btw ..

You forgot one thing, I would have to also change the case because it's got the drilled lugs!!!

At that point, might as well buy an LV

I'm no purist so I like it. Doesn't seem like you are trying to pass it off as a real LV so I see no issue at all, it's your watch, keep it interesting.

Looks good I think.

I never cared for the maxi dial and hands so much, particularly in the 5 digit, so in my opinion a bit better looking than the original LV.

Your watch, your coin to replace the bezel, that's no problem. Rolex control the price of the bezel so any increase in price versus the black is on them, not the consumer. Make more!

He’s got a point. GMT 16710 owners constantly switch up bezels and nobody says anything about that. It’s when they go to sell it as an original, that’s when the problem arises.

Oh yes, those black bezel submariners are SO boring (that’s why they’re SO popular!). Please.

I have a 2004 16610 lv and a 1994 16610.
At some point I will change the bezel insert of the 16610 and put a blue one with white ascents and white pip from a bluesy. I don't care about originality. It will be very unique to my eyes. I also have a Tudor black bay 58 black with green bezel from the gold one. Whatever makes one happy.
