Icon4 They got him!

The scumbag who tried to steal a 16613 Submariner from me last July, has been caught and has been jailed for 3 years. Great news, a Rolex scammer taken off the streets, hopefully he learns his lesson in the jail.

"He tried on the watch and 'simply never took it off'. He apparently paid for it online then showed its owner fake confirmation of the payment. They called the bank to double check but McDonagh became 'annoyed'."

At this moment he should've been knocked out cold

That's exactly what he tried with me, I got the watch back from him though. I think he realised he (his vehicle) was locked in (we have electric gates) and was not going to get away. I think our driveway gates saved the day.

Glad it ended safely for you and you feel some relief in the crook's conviction.

For anyone reading this and the past stories of losses while selling a watch - never, never, never meet an otherwise unknown buyer in your home, your car, or anywhere else except a staffed Police Station that supports a safe zone for transactions.

I’ll take it a step further Paul. Simply do not meet face to face end of story. It’s not worth it.

Glad this piece of crap got what he had coming.

Does not apply to UK..you cannot conduct business like this in a police station or bank and the suggestion of meeting anywhere other than the sellers home would be a red flag. Different culture over here, I appreciate you guys over there do it differently.

Thanks for the context in UK.

I wonder why the UK authorities choose not to prevent the criminals who use online/FB meet ups to ply their trade?

Poor fellow did it because of his “severe anxiety.” I’ve never been in a British prison but I bet that’s gonna make it worse.

Great to hear altho 3 years is slim for a repeat offender but UK law is soft as sheet as we all know.

As for meeting, some banks still have double security doors so that is an option as the thief cannot just run out into the street, best to ask your bank first if you can do the deal at one of their tables and for them to keep an eye on the deal and your actions.

I’d be suspicious of any 21 year old wanting to buy my Rolex. Generally young kids don’t have that kind of money.

I believe a Rolex definitely meets the threshold for felony.

Crazy story.

I guess I’ve been lucky over the years. Every face to face dealing I’ve had has been an absolute pleasure, mind you, I vet the buyer/seller before agreeing to meet.

I've been too complacent. I deal with the public everyday with business so I'll happily go meet anyone or anyone can come to me and I don't think twice about it, until now. My day to day business does not attract thieves though, so I'll make sure this never happens again by only dealing with my local grey dealer if I have a Rolex to sell.

If you advertise a Rolex for sale online, you are prey for scammers and thieves. It's the wild west out there, anything goes. I'll deal with my grey dealer only from now.

I don’t blame you one bit, especially knowing that police and bank meeting places aren’t an option

I suspect the only lesson he will learn is how to be more successful once he is released back to the street.

Before crimes like these began, I commonly met up at a restaurant or Starbucks to do a deal as buyer or seller.

Nowadays that's out of the question.

Same here Paul.

In fact, just about 3 weeks ago I bought my latest watch and met up with the seller in person at … you guessed it … a Starbucks.

Granted I did a few checks on who he was through the forum and felt comfortable after everything checked out. We also had a telephone conversation before hand as well.

I guess ultimately there’s no way to be 100% certain these days.

Definitely your best option. I don't sell many things privately any more. Too many time wasters, joint casers and con artists. A pity.

Always need to be careful in today's world.

Meet in public location in safe area during the day and a discrete cash transaction only. Still have to be careful.

The easiest and safest way to do the transaction is at a police station. Crooks will not willingly show up there. They have designated trade zones even. You sell online to a grey and you'll take a bath.
