How great is it when somebody notices your watch??

How great is it when somebody notices your watch and is on the same wavelength as you?

I am UK based, and went out to watch my football team (soccer) Leeds United play yesterday in a local derby game.

Afterwards, we went our for Christmas drinks with friends, and was having a great time.

A couple who my friend Steve (who was with me) knows turned up later on, and we were having a good old time of it.

Anyway, I went to the bar for a round of drinks, and he came up to help my carry them.

The first thing he did was point at my watch, my Submariner, and revealed his on his wrist. He had an immaculate 15 year old date version... and from then on we were in watch heaven nattering away!

He said he'd noticed it straight away, but I hadn't seen his because his sleeves were low over his watch.

A funny chance meeting, but great all the same, better than the usual 9/10 times questions about if it's fake or not by people, which always annoys me.

I don't really mention my watch stuff to the people who I keep company with, it's a private thing, and it was comical to watch us both go off into WIS geekdom together, right in the middle of football chat.

A nice happening.

That's awesome, as not all people understand the watch addiction or appreciate them as we do.

last Thursday afternoon when I was travelling on London underground tube home from watching tennis matches st the Royal Albert Hall.... Got onto the tube and sat down in front of this young-ish dude with an LV.

I wore the LV that day also but both my jumper and coat sleeve was over the entire top of the watch but you can tell from the side profile that it is a rolex of some sort. The young guy spotted and for almost the whole trip he purposely showed me his LV by moving his arms and crossing them in front of him... It was pretty funny. For some reason no matter what I did, the sleeve did not move on me so he wasn't able to what watch I had on.

I could tell it was driving him crazy. ;-)

In eight months of daily wear, not a single person has commented on my DSSD. Perhaps that is a sign that I need different friends in my life.

I typically hate it when people comment on my watch, but that's because most of my friends are in serious debt ($100,000 or more) from school. When people comment on the watch, my friends get uneasy because it reminds them of the debt.

That said, when I am alone or with someone that also appreciates watches, it is nice to strike up a conversation with someone that really knows watches. But if it's someone that just wants to obsess over the watch, I ignore it and typically leave.

It's great finding people with common interests, usually fairly difficult with watches. Most people that I speak to think spending over $200 on a watch is just throwing money away, which is why I rarely bring up any of my watches to people in conversation. Just not worth the hassle.

One of my best friends is a definite watch fanatic - well over 100 in his collection and most are ones we'd all appreciate. One of the highlights of my week is meeting him at Starbucks to discuss all things watches, cars, and life.

Mentioned this in another thread...but save for one comment a guy made re: my Speedy Pro while I was picking up my laundry - zero comments have come my way in public about any Rolex. This guy said he had "owned that watch before" - a giveaway WIS comment.

Actually, I am waiting for my Brother-in-Law to comment when I (must) see him over XMAS.

He has a bunch of lower-end watches, Citizens, and the like...(perfectly fine mind you. I had a Citizen diver Quartz before it died)

I suspect he will a) ask if my watches are fake or b) what they cost or c) both a & b.

This is a guy who buys stuff from WalMart uses the stuff, and then puts whatever he bought *carefully* back in the package and RETURNS the stuff for a REFUND.

I am going to tell them they are REAL, but not address the prices. That will drive him NUTZ.

Hmm. This is the first year I am looking forward to seeing the Stuffed Shirt!!!

I love talking shop when a WIS notices, but just walk away when the attention is of the "is it real" variety.

It's just one dork to deal with. His wife is no prize either...but I like the rest of the in laws.

Hey Sakuraba, long time. I am with you. Great to have the camaraderie with a WIS or someone who seems interested. A buddy of mine is planning on eventual Rolex purchase and it's fun giving him advice I have gleaned here.

Not necessarily... Lots of TRF stories / threads about things going awry when a WIS and not so WIS talk about watches.
