Icon20 Rolex listens - Daytona, what would you change?

So, hypothetically, Rolex secretly reached out to you. Their question was simple, what would you change (if anything) on the Daytona to make it truly perfect? I’ve added 4 of mine for inspiration.

It would be interesting to get TRF member views as to what the perfect Daytona could be. I understand that there’s 100s of tweaks that could be done, and some may have desires I’ve overlooked (please include these in your message - Mix Nirvana). For some the Daytona hasn’t ever appealed, but I’d be interested to know from you what would change your mind if Rolex offered you with a clean canvas and promised to put your creation into production. The watch could be an anniversary piece, 1 year only heritage version or a modern permanent production piece. You decide.

*To simplify - This whole pole focuses solely upon the SS Daytona, non oysterflex.

I would say for me I don’t wear a Daytona that often because I like the date function - however, I’m not sure where I would like the date to be on the dial, or actually if it would in fact ruin the Daytona dial. Not a fan of the four o clock date, I like how VC place it.

Verdict - don’t mess with it. (If being picky a tad larger)

It’s perfect as it is.
I prefer watches that wear smaller
IMO it’s a worthy exit / grail watch
Edit: there is one thing I’d change - the opportunity to buy one at MRSP!

No Date (how slow are those race cars that on a “tool” watch you need the date !!???)

Keep it at 40mm, remove PCL and add a date (or offer 1 version with date and 1 without, like the Sub).

Keep the size and movement. Remove the PCL/polished lugs. Narrow bezel to vintage proportions, but keep it ceramic in the spirit of the originals. Result is also a larger dial, with better spacing of the sub-dials.

I'd also keep it no-date. If Rolex wants to introduce a date function to a chronograph, great, but maybe that's a new model. And personally, I think it would make the most sense to place a double date right in the middle, as is done on the Tudor Glamour Double Date.

I see where you’re coming from, but I found it better to utilize the dimensions that Rolex declared in its literature since most forum readers use that reference and not the exact caliper measured dimensions. An example is also the 41mm sub which in reality is only 0.03mm larger than the outgoing version.

4 digit 39mm
5 digit & beyond 40mm

I think aesthetically it’s perfect but functionally I really like a date and as a result I have three that get very little wrist time.

Just got mine, and really wish it was 1 or even 2 mm larger. Maybe remove the screw down aspect of the chrono as well.

It's an ugly POS

The biggest issue is the 6 on the 9 o'clock dial is actually upside down compared the the other numerals on the dial

The dials don't match in their layout

The whole thing sucks and is physically uncomfortable to look at

Vintage models are so much better and better balanced

Wouldn't dream of buying the current models

I would leave size and colour combo as is. Satin finish the lugs and bracelet. I would also have dial have only three lines: Rolex, Cosmograph, and Daytona

First off the poll is inaccurate, as it states keep the Daytona at 40mm. It's at a tiny 38.5mm, my other real 40mm watches eclipse it. A real 40mm size would be very welcome.

To the people who want to molest the Daytona with a date window; what’s wrong with you? A Zenith El Primero is a good option if you want a date window. But leave the Daytona and Speedmaster Pro true to their heritage

Rolex clearly has embraced the II designation. That could keep what they have and introduce a larger case size and develop that model lineup. I don’t think this watch needs a date window. Things just get cluttered.

I love the design, just too small for me. Find a way to scale it up a bit while keeping everything else the same and I would "try" to get one for sure.

Hi, the pole is based upon technical specifications gleaned from Rolex.com

We all know that measuring certain watches uncovers the exact mm size. The pole was designed to be participated by those who base their knowledge on publicly available info from Rolex.

Yes, you’re right, but the true reference sizing has been covered ad nauseam on TRF.

Final point, the 4 digit Daytona was marketed as a 39mm

Agree on both counts.

On top I'd want them to drop the lifeboat shaped hour markers for more Zenith Daytona style hour markers.

Thank you.

How about a DAY function ??

Maybe a Moonphase ???

It’s a Sports watch, themed for racing, and should be presented as such … seconds, minutes, hours, with a stop watch … perfect.
