Tudor 7031 dial

Hello friends,

I have sent my newly acquired Tudor Home Plate for it's second spa in it's entire history. It's a one owner watch and has only been serviced once in it's lifetime before I bought it.

Before sending it in to my watchmaker, I always thought there are some minor paint defects around the "40" outer ring. However, after removing the movement and dial, my watchmaker noted those are white powder instead of paint defects.

Now, he is hesitant to try removing them and I completely understand his points. Any accidents, and I will end up with scratches, blown off lume, or even actual paint coming off the dial.

Any of you actually experience such white powder and had success clearing them pls? Brushing, blowing or sticking them off? What might create such powder?

There is just this naggy feeling that something simple might fix it. And I am missing this opportunity since the dial is already out of the watch.

I think it's just paint reaction over time as it drys, bubbles, discolours and turns to a salty looking slightly raised deposit... it's happened on a few of mine a few years ago before I sold them. It's a lovely dial and I suspect won't get worse that quickly. You could try blowing it with a IT air bulb think (like a old car horn) or lightly brush with one of those very expensive, very fine, make-up brushes...but not for faint hearted ! Ps looks like an early bit between 50 and 55 too.

If it does not come off with a combination of air and a (very) soft bristle brush I would just leave it alone. The texture on that dial will hold the residue and thge paint will not have a lot of bonding to dial - very easy to go sideways and damage the dial.

Other dial surfaces might have more options - this one does not.

That's very good information and advice Paul! I will leave it alone then. Removing it will only expose the metal surface and make it worse. If I understand you properly.

I hope you kept a pc or 2 of these instead of selling them all. Amazing watch, especially in real life.

Yes my friend. Totally agreed. Since it's paint residue, I will definitely not remove it.

Once in a while, you see an unpolished Tudor Home Plate. Then you have the super rare black dial version. Now, presenting to you a tropical brown dial example.

Congrats OP and look really good after the spa.

I know that this is Valjoux Chrono movement and finding parts will be difficult. Do you happen face any difficulty in finding replacement parts (if needed) during your movement spa servicing?

Hahaha. I am turning 50 yrs old soon. No longer have ba**s of steel my friend. All my watch maker did was ONE quick blow and that's it. Whatever came off is off!!! Leaving the rest for another day.

Actually no parts have been replaced except the crystal. Just deep cleaning and correct amount of oiling at the necessary location.

It is actually quite cheap to buy a donor movement in case any parts need replacing. Watches using Valjoux 7734 movement can be found at very reasonable prices in Singapore. I know this as I discussed this route with my watchmaker in case we need to pursue it.

The crystal, I sourced from Ray Wu. He has these NOS listed in our forum. Not cheap, but worth every single cent.

Looks great. The leather NATO is nice for a change, but it really belongs on the Oyster steel bracelet.

Yes sir. More concerned about the end links scratching inbetween the lugs. :)

The bracelet will definitely be fitted back once I wear this less frequently.
