GRAIL Incoming

With the word 'Grail' in the title, I can imagine that one or two of you will be left scratching your heads when you see which reference I'm actually referring to here. Some think a grail has to be PM, some think it has to cost more than a row of houses in Knightsbridge and others are of the view it should be something one has saved their entire life for. Me? I think it can be anything you want it to be as long as it's something you REALLY want and/or have wanted a long, long time.

I've been jonesing for this piece for thirty years. I only started collecting watches recently as I've never really been in a financial position to do so before now. Well, I probbaly have been but I preferred motorcycles when I was younger. I've bought seven fine watches in the last three years but, for some bizarre reason that I am not able to provide an explanation for, I've never got around to picking this one up. Maybe it's because I've always known in the back of my mind that some of my watches are relatively difficult to acquire and that if I didn't buy them when I did then the opportunity might not present itself for a while or, in the case of two of my PAMs, ever again. I really don't know.

Anyhoo, I'm in Saigon on a surprise trip with my beautiful (and clinically insane) wife. For my 50th birthday, she's been planning this trip for the past nine months with military precision and this vacation was my present. Her words: "what do I buy the man who has everything?" My answer: "penicillin". Her reaction - whack! My reply "ouch!"

To make sure I had a keepsake present for my half century, she also bought me a MB pencil to match one of my pens. Believe me when I tell you, I was bouncing like a five year old at Christmas with this holiday so didn't expect (or want) anything else. I won't go into what my mum did for my birthday here because that's not what this thread is about but put it this way, I was left speechless. That never happens! When I opened my pencil I was running on the ceiling. We had a chilled out day for the rest of the day and at dinner tonight, after my the main course, my wife decided to go to the bathroom and returned with what looked like a wrapped up shoebox; she had another present for me. I was gobsmacked. Again. I opened it up (it was like one of those Russian dolls in several layers and it took about half an hour to get through the wrappings) and I eventually got to this. I mean, how was I supposed to react? I thought I was done after scoring my 737 on the weekend but Mrs Van D obviously had other ideas. I do not deserve a wife like this!

So, enough of my Ruud Van Drivel, here's my Grail, the humble but classic.........

A Grail is something you covet not others. If I could only have one watch and one watch only; it would be the Sub. Congrats!
