Did Rolex Make 40-41mm OP or DJ Decades Ago?

Did Rolex Make 40-41mm OP or DJ Decades Ago? I’m looking at getting into the vintage Rolex game. Don’t want to break the bank (do those two things go together?) and am looking for stainless steel models. Did Rolex do anything like this in the past? Any linen dials or other unique dials? There are a bunch of 36mm easy to find, but those don’t fit my wrist well. My idea is to get a nice, 40-41mm vintage OP or DJ and source a nice leather strap for it. I think that would look just lovely.

Any help, guidance, reference numbers, or examples would be very much appreciated.

No.

But based on your avatar, you appear to like watches that are too large for your wrist according to my taste. So perhaps this may be a matter of perception, which may change if you give it a chance.

Datejust should be 36mm as should a day date. Rolex really messed up the modern watches if you ask me.

I can see bumping them up to maybe 38mm but 40-41 for a non sports watch looks silly.

I’m 5’ 9” 240 pounds of a lot of muscle and you think a 42mm Seamaster and a 36mm OP (which is my girlfriend’s) look too big on my wrist?

Photos can obviously distort things, but yeah, the Seamaster looks huge to me. And I don't know how to translate "5’ 9” 240 pounds of a lot of muscle" into wrist size, but 36mm DJs look great on a 7.5" wrist IMO.

5ft 10in - 220lbs - 7.5” wrist & did the bodybuilding thing for 14 or so years. I went through the 41mm & 42mm watch thing. This was after 3 different 36mm Datejust for 8-10 years.

I used to love the larger watches - I had a bit of the “is this watch too small for me” itus. I had a Sinn U2 which is huge, a 42mm explorer II for 5 years until I realized it looks like a bad modern art painting. 2007 IWC Aquatimer which was big.

I bought a Tudor Pelagos after the Explorer and realized that they looks silly. It looked like a flava flav watch to me. Now it’s either a 39/40mm vintage/classic Rolex/Tudor or a 36mm Datejust.

The big watch thing is a fad that is dying thank god. I’m not saying don’t wear what you want, it’s your watch.

I think back to my childhood when my dad wore his 36mm Datejust like a boss (6’4” & 250) and the time I met Red Adair at the Powerboat Races in Galveston TX - he wore a 36mm yellow gold President. He wasn’t small.

Love the ad of Red and his Texas Timex.

I didn’t mean to offend anyone on the 42mm explorer being ugly, I tried to edit the post and for some reason the forum kept timing out. It just wasn’t for me.

Decades ago, Rolex didn't even make a 36mm OP. Pre-2000 what I recall for the midsize*/larger are:

DJ - 36
AK (SS) - 34
OP (TT) - 34
OPD - 34
Explorer - 36
Milgauss - 37
All graduated bezel Pro - 40 (besides YM35)

*Technically, for much of the 20th Century, the 31mm were the midsize.

Love my Explorer II, which my wife bought me last Christmas. I think it looks appropriate on my 7-1/2” wrist.

My wife sends me jacek’s Instagram posts when he lists any solid gold Datejust/stone dial or daydate with rare dials. Like tiger eye dials and such.

Laugh out loud, literally.

Total aside, but anyone else catch the inconsistency in the ad? It features a DD, yet references a trip-lock crown. AFAIK, those two were never paired together.

There is an oversized Tudor version of the DJ that has a 38mm case.
