Why are JLC market values so low?

I’m always amazed by how affordable the Jaeger Le-Coultre line goes for second hand. Recently saw an auction where a new rose gold ultra thin went for 8k. Retail on that is $19.4. You’re getting something pretty close to the quality of a Calatrava for less than a Datejust. What gives?

Unfortunately, second hand pricing is usually pumped because of hype, and JLC is not a hyped up watch. Great value for buyers though.

They do some great watches, have a rich heritage and fly under the radar for most people. That last point is important IMO... they didn't get caught in the hype. Jlc generally trade like most watches did until about 5 years ago, i.e. below list price.

A thread is useless without pics ;) , so...

I tried on the new Polaris Perpetual last week. Beautiful dial, but felt too "slab sided" to me despite the fact it isn't all that thick on paper.

Very nice detailed dial on that. It does look pretty thick in the side shot though. I never got too excited about their line of modern Polaris but their moon phase dress watches look good

Also tried on the Polaris PC last week but had a different impression. I guess if you approach the watch as a dress piece, it will feel too thick. But if you approach as a sports watch, it's actually very wearable and great wrist presence. To each their own...

I plan to explore JLC this year and hopefully pick something up.

Don’t want to sound like a broken record but nothing viable interests me in the Rolex range

Not always just rappers or ballers. There’s a guy named John Mayer who is the biggest hypebeast over any rapper. Which I’m sure you’re aware lol

Because their service costs are the price of the watch.

Brand recognition and service costs don’t help plus traditional dress style watches loose a lot of value from virtually every brand e.g Rolex Cellini

My point is that anything he touches with watches will automatically turn into a hype watch now a days. 116508 for example

They’re not overly blingy or large… so not much of a demand. I’m a big fan of the brand and there are definitely some values to be had. Especially in the dress watch segment. My formal dress watch for the longest was a Reserve De Marche 37.mm…. If you look around you can get them for about 3-3.4k used.

Plus they have an 8 year warranty which helps out. Obviously won’t save you for a catastrophic damage, but something that just stops after a few years it should.

I love JLC but there’s probably a limit on what I’d spend on any single watch from them. As much as I really like the Duometre there’s no doubt something else from someone else I’d rather have for that money. And I’m unlikely to buy from a continue and would go to where I could get a discount or get secondhand.

False. JLC service costs are very reasonable compared to the likes of AP, PP, ALS, etc. when it comes to complications. For what AP charges to service a time only watch JLC will service a tourbillon or a perpetual.

Just been quoted £570 for a full service on a Reverso Grande Talle. That’s Omega prices.

Can’t speak to the more complicated models, but a full service and polish on my Geophysic 1958 was only $600ish. Which i didn’t think was too bad.

Plus they got the service completed and returned to me in about 5 weeks. MUcH better than service times for PP, ALS or AP

It costs several thousand to service some of the more complex dress watches. Servicing a JLC Perpetual Calendar is probably going to be $3k even from an independent.

There are a few other brands that have similarly poor resale value: Blancpain, IWC, Vacheron.

Agree

I took an AP PC, Lange, and JLC reverse in for servicing in December. Was quoted 6 months and +usd1k at Lange and 10 weeks and usd700 at JLC. AP still hasn’t gotten to me on a quote but it’ll be more than 6 months and probably usd3k

I never understood why they discontinue the deepsea. My favorite watch in a long time.

JLC is a bit like Vacheron, a bit boring and bland and rather expensive for most people. The current master control should be 37-38mm, the polaris is too big and thick etc.

i am looking at the duometre next.
