Leaving my Rolex at home for the first time while traveling

So I’ve decided to leave my Sub at home for the first time while traveling, on vacation in Rome. Gonna visit all the famous tourist places around town.
Time to put the old G-Shock to work!

Am I getting older and sceptical or older and wiser

Good decision. If you aren’t comfortable wearing it, then it’s best to leave it at home.

My wife and I travel to Italy every other year and we always spend at least 3 days in Rome. I usually wear my BLRO You’ll see people wearing Rolex all over the city.

Yes best to be relaxed and not anxious about watches on holiday. Last time I went to Rome I wore a Tudor and it was fine but definitely have to be careful

I have a Tudor Pelagos on a NATO strap that I have been wearing on vacations for several years, with a few exceptions. It’s a super practical vacation watch and I really enjoy it.

You do the right thing although I am a little disappointed that we aren’t being asked if it’s safe to wear your favourite timepiece out in public. Enjoy the trip I’m sure you’ll have a great time

It's absolutely your decision and that's fine. I personally make sure to wear a Rolex when I go abroad, especially to Europe. I love enjoying a nice watch while out and about, or out for dinner, by the beach etc...

Italy is full of Rolex wearers, you just need to be aware of your surroundings.

G-Shock will probably be more useful anyway.

This past May we toured Italy for 14 days, Venice, Florence, Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri & back to Rome.

Wore & wear my BLNR daily. Met a woman who worked at Chopard, waiting on the boat back to Sorrento.

I've worn a Rolex every day for 36 years without a second thought.

Learned a long time ago, nobody cares about your watch. The only ones who notice are the others who appreciate watches & no one will say anything but those who know already know.

Best advice, don't let anyone know where you are or when you are until you aren't where you were & back from whence you had been & home again at some other time. If no one on any social forum knows your plans, you may be a thievery target.

Scammers & thieves are opportunists no matter where you are.

My driver from Naples to Sorrento told me to not wear my gold Daytona in Naples and I think mentioned Rome, too. He even told me to not wear it when returning to the Naples airport. This was unsolicited advice and I thought a bit overkill.
It's been 5 years since I've been to Rome, and I wore a ceramic Speedmaster without a care in the world. I think theft has gotten worse since.
I think you're making the right call if it would be a stressor for you.

We travel to Italy often over the years. I have always brought a Rolex with me. I think only one time I didn’t, I brought a Panerai. I would miss not having a nice watch on my travels. Never had an issue.

Key words “tourist places”… smart move on your part.

Not sure I would’ve gone straight to G shock but I certainly would choose something in the lower four digits rather than a Rolex.

Just take the Submariner, I took my new Datejust 2 years ago to Rome, visited all the famous places, no danger and no regrets (tshirt weather). Just nice stories to remember with the watch!

Rome is safe, Italians are all over with Rolexes and tourist.
Generally speaking beside some cities already mentioned, Europe is safe.
Definitely Italy is OK ;)
