Need advise for the 1675

Hello Forum friends and experts!

I recently bought a 1675 from online seller by auction.
When I received it, found a big scratch at 6 o’clock on the dial
It was a drag mark by the GMT hand.
It was not described in sellers listing, so they offered return.

However I really like the watch, especially the insert….
The scratch is deep and large, it bothers me

I paid about $12k for the watch.
What’s your advice ? Would you keep it?

Send it back, spend a little more from a reputable vintage dealer and you’ll be much happier!

Return it. Damage like that will always bother you. Increase your budget and get a better example.

I must disagree with everyone in this thread. This is not a scratch, it is a drag mark as is evidenced by the line right across the 6 marker. The lume that was dragged onto the dial surface can be cleaned and removed. The line through the 6 marker cannot be repaired without being visible. If you like the watch you can get it corrected. Also, this may have happened during shipping so the seller may not have even seen it. Where was it sold and was the damage visible in the photos?

I would agree with others that a return would be in order if it wasn't something disclosed when the purchase was made - especially if it bothered me as it seems to bother the buyer. A significant portion of the value of this is the dial itself which doesn't bode well for the value if it is damaged.

Not good that the seller didn't mention the scratch in the listing, but wasn't it obvious in the photos, which presumably you saw before buying the watch?

Sellers often will say the photos are part of the description.

The drag mark is not going to go away, so the fix is to either search high and low for another, correct, dial, or to have the mark professionally touched up to lessen the affect.

First, I would figure out why it only dragged in that spot. Is it possible the dial and movement are not correctly seated?
Secondly, if you choose to keep it, the damage was done in a great place, should you want to have it repaired by an expert. No text or markers were damaged, so if cleaning the tritium dust isn't enough, a light black or matte clear mist should have it looking new. Matching the lume should be easy if the right person is doing it. Having said all that, it doesn't mean the repair will be cheap.
Perhaps the seller can refund a portion of the price for the damage? It's a beautiful watch, but it's really hard to see the level of damage. Smeared lume powder is much different that gouge in the paint. Finally, if you return it, are you confident you can find an equal or better replacement for the same price?

As mentioned not great with the damage on the dial but surely as the buyer you saw pictures before you bought it?

I would return it and buy the watch that you want. By that I mean, that you actually get the watch that you thought you were getting. No undisclosed damage. There are many watches out there and you might need to wait to find exactly what you want but getting a watch with a damaged dial is no OK in my opinion.

Ahhh, my favorite—this watch has some issues that I'm not willing to textually/verbally disclose—disclosure. Only you can decide if this drag mark is something you can live with, it's a personal choice.
