thinking of getting my first Patek
Hi guys I own about 6 Rolex watches and 2 Audemars Piguet watches, Im thinking of getting my first Patek but i have a issue and this is why i may go with AP for my 3rd. My big issue is i live in Los angeles and since crime has gotten out of hand I have had to put my Rolex watches in my safety deposit box and am wearing my royal oak because of the 2 year theft insurance they offer when you buy the watch, do you guys think that Patek will at some point incorporate this policy as well as id like to start a patek collection but right now i wouldnt be able to enjoy it :( also insurance in la is b*tch

Sucks that’s the reason you’re considering not getting a Patek.

I know.. I wish they would do what AP does so you can enjoy the watch with no worries for a couple of years

Just insure the Patek from theft while out and about too? (Obviously does not prevent you potentially getting hurt by a mugger unfortunately.)
And / or choose a non-hype Patek? Plenty of really nice ones to choose from beyond the usual suspects. |

If you are concerned about substantial loss then you have to insure it. Who cares about a free 2 year insurance plan? What then do you do about year 3 and beyond, sell it when the insurance expires?

Isn't there a saying that you shouldn't buy a watch if you can't afford to lose it...
More seriously, I think you got your priorities skewed if 2 years of free insurance move the needle one way or another. What is the value of the free AP insurance? Like 2% a year or 4% total of the watch value? Get the watch you like, get it insured if you don't like to self insure, and enjoy it. |

Buy the watch you want. Insure it and enjoy it.

I'm in the same boat regarding concerns about crime in California. get your CCW license, that's the best personal insurance your can own in CA.

Just wear long sleeves if you're not in a safe place.
Don't count on insurance and potentially getting robbed with violence |

Depending on which Patek you are considering, the Royal Oak is almost certainly more noticeable (the bracelet , case shape) and therefore more a target. I wear mine without worry and have them insured through Hodinkee.

in my opinion, 6119g, 5226g, 5212a, 5205g, 5235r would be nice entries to the brand and aren't "risky options" if you are scared of being robbed...

Was just about to say the same thing, don't see much of a difference personally between a Royal Oak and any Patek like a Nautilus or Aquanaut... working on the Hodinkee Insurance as we speak myself |
