Rainbow Daytona, in the wild
I went to dinner at Capital Grille in King of Prussia Pennsylvania with my wife on Thursday night. There was a bit of a commotion at the hostess table and she mentioned there was a lot going on. Eventually, she walked us back to our seat and we were right in front of a private room.
We saw a lot of well-dressed people that seem to have money walking in and I always notice watches. Lol I’m sure most of you do too. Then I saw a guy walking by and I thought I was at a rainbow Daytona. Try to take a closer look and it was. I approached him and asked “hey man is that a rainbow Daytona?” he replied, yes by nodding, I asked if I could get a closer look. He said yes and then attended to a conversation elsewhere. Kind of blew me off and I acted like a jerk. I stood there waiting for about 10 seconds and then went back to my table. He completely ignored me. So two questions, has anyone else ever seen one in the wild? Second question if you’re wearing a Rolex rainbow Daytona, you’re obviously a watch enthusiast. Why would you blow people off? Who are interested in seeing it? They’re obviously enthusiast as well. I have people approach me from time to time asking about my watches, and I always thought to show them and take time to talk to them about what they have. Curious on your thoughts. Pic for effect.

I don’t see many nice watches where I live. I’m not sure why that is, but probably has a lot to do with Mennonite sensibility
Maybe I’m reading your post wrong, but it sounds like this chap was nice enough to acknowledge you, but perhaps you interrupted a conversation that he was about to have. Don’t know, because I wasn’t there |

First thought. "Hey man, is that a million bucks on your wrist?" You may as well have said just that.
Second thought. Ali Express sells them for $140. Maybe he didn't want someone looking at it in detail. The only heavy hitter I've seen in public was a diamond dial Day-Date on the Disney World monorail but I didn't say anything because I realize some people just wear what they want/like and it's not an open invitation for others. |

Personally, I would only comment on someone's expensive watch if we were at the same party, or at the same private club, or some other situation where they would be comfortable that I was somewhat "vetted" and not perhaps someone with bad intentions.
I think when you approach someone and comment on their six digit watch, you have to be prepared for them to not want to engage you. It's not like they're driving a million dollar car and it's obvious to everyone from across the street. Just my opinion.

Many years ago my boss actually got one…he was a watch enthusiast and independently very wealthy (the rumor was that his family came from Italian royalty of some sort). In any case I had just heard about this watch (it must have been the year it was introduced, or close to it?) and he walks into my office to talk to me about something, points at something on my desk and that’s when I saw it. I literally gasped and said omg is that the rainbow Daytona!?! And proceeded to spout out some specs about it (I mean totally geeked out!). He was pleased I knew (he was a bit of a showoff) and let me try it on and everything. I was swooning over it! I was over the moon…and that is how I saw my one and only rainbow ever and even managed to try it on. I recall at the time it was like $30k maybe?? I always wondered if he kept it .

I have never seen one in the wild. Also, I probably would have just observed it from a distance.

I have seen a rbow only once and once also an aftermarket version, at different times. The aftermarket one was not instantly noticeable until a closer look and then i could tell. Maybe that was the situation here?
Regardless, i look at watches but have learned to rarely engage in small talk. I think of it like this: a woman in a provocative dress may want to be noticed, but your odds of a meaningful interaction are higher if she approaches you rather than vice versa :) |

Not everyone who owns a nice watch is a watch enthusiast. I comment whenever a see a nice watch and most people say thanks and move on. The ones who are enthusiasts will stop and talk for a bit.

Maybe he just didn’t want too much attention on his watch from a stranger, especially nowadays…
I never look for attention on mine…

Hmmm, this sounds like the 'flip side' to another recent trf thread. i assume you didn't enter a private room to ask him.

I know it’s a nice, expensive, exquisite watch, but it’s not something I would buy or wear.

A friend has one. He was carrying it around one evening in a small pouch. I got to try it on and wear it for a little bit. An absolutely amazing piece. I would post a picture but the image is too big.

Don’t be too hard on the guy. Maybe he was busy, distracted, embarrassed or a combo there of. Sometimes you just never know what people are dealing with or distracted by.

Privacy is an issue for me. I don't ask people I don't know about their belongings and I'm not overly keen on others asking me about mine. It's obviously different if we know each other. I was out for coffee the other day and a younger fellow walked in with a friend and sat nearby. I was pretty sure he was wearing a TT GMT but I wasn't going to ask and do a "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" sort of deal. People are different.

I’ve tried on before, it’s amazing. If it were me and a stranger came up wanted a closer look , i would be very concerned with motive. Be polite smile say thanks and then ignore and watch my back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It isn’t a subtle watch and this interaction happened at a steak house… someone wearing such a watch is inviting attention.
That said, it is all about the tone and non verbal cues. Hard to know exactly how you came across and also hard to know the exact context. It could depend on why they were there and with whom, timing etc. In other words, this could be anywhere from them being a stuck-up blowhard to them simply not looking to attract further attention from their own group about the very expensive (or fake!) watch on their wrist. |

I absolutely wouldn't assume that the owner of a rainbow Daytona would be into watches. However, if it had been an Ed White..............

Maybe he was just busy engaging with his friends and didn’t want to be rude to tell you in a different way to bugger off.

I really don't understand people doing this.
I certainly wouldn't like a stranger approaching me in this situation and asking about my watch and I wouldn't dream of doing it to someone else. |

Did it maybe not originate from Switzerland and the last thing he wanted was a watch enthusiast having a close look and possibly noticing? Or, not sure what watch you were wearing, or if he would be able to notice at a glance, but he might not have realised you were an enthusiast and unfortunately in the world we now live in security is a consideration. |

If people ask me “is that a Rolex”?
I generally say, yes the man in Bali that sold it to me said it is!

He did better than me. I would have said that it was fake and moved on.
One time I asked if someone that was his Greubel Forsey. He motioned as if I were about to rob him. Lol. I have only seen the older one with the round/square diamond markers. |

I’d say mini violation but excusable as you are an enthusiast and excited about it.
I’d probably run away too after a quick smile. |

Yes, saw one when boarding an Emirates flight from Dubai to the Maldives. Family of 4, and the wife had it on, all were in First/Suites. Was not an Emirati family though, I think they were Swiss.

There are some serious collections/collectors here on the Main Line - also some serious a holes But, I don’t doubt it’s real.
