I really like Grand Seikos and this watch is pretty impressive on paper. Three barrels is not something you see very often and I like the power reserve indicator on the movement not to mention the platinum case.

...Still, at this price I'd rather go with something with a bit more to offer. Nothing to do with the name on the dial, quite the opposite but I personally think that at this price I'd like a slightly more decorated movement (especially with a sapphire caseback) and a bit more going on on the dial complication wise.

I don't really see the fuss about the finishing of the movement. Most of what you see is the plate, though nicely finished, not the movement. It is an extremely well executed piece both technically and esthetics wise but for $55,000 my choice would be a Lange, PP or a VC. I just saw a Calatrava with a hunters case there's a lot more to look at as far as finishing goes. Almost seems like a bargain at $38,000 compared to the Grand Seiko. You can almost be sure you will get most of that money back when you decided to sell it not so sure about the Grand Seiko.

Not everyone buying watches lives their life according to residual value – many that can afford such sums easily buy because they simply what they like the look of or its exclusivity.
This obsession over how much of its RRP it’ll retain seems to be the sole preserve of forum members only, who are but a small (if somewhat vocal) drop in the ocean compared to the typical watch-buying consumer.

Show me a Lange/Patek/Vacheron in Platinum, produced at a rate of 20 pieces per annum, that costs $55K for a start – they we can begin to compare apples with apples.

For 55k, it's easy to say that a better buy would be something from a more established brand like PP or ALS. For this kind of money, you could even buy something from a real high end "micro" brand like Laurent Ferrier or FP Journe. But a watch like this isn't about brand name.

This watch embodies the Japanese aesthetic and mentality perfectly. It's made to the highest standard, its practical, and it is not flashy.

Different strokes for different folks, call me fussy but I like to admire the art of a nicely finished movement every now and then, hence the fact that I particularly like the PR indicator on the back. Besides, I know that GS is capable of making some nice Côtes de Genève or Côtes Droites on their bridges and plates, I just wish they'd have done it on this masterpiece of theirs.

Furthermore, I think that giving way too much importance to the brand name becomes a real problem. Be it with newer releases that are controversial to say the least, quality control that gets a tad problematic or masterpieces that get ignored because of their names.
