Multiple Sports models or all the $ in one watch?

Do you think it’s better in this current Rolex watch climate to have multiple professional models like BLRO or BLNR plus Explorer ll or say like Migauss or all the money wrapped up in a Daytona?

With all sport models continuing to increase, curious about your opinions?

I would also go as far to say, this post is probably more relative to current or past Daytona owners simply because, if you have never had one and currently trying to get one and it’s considered to be your grail, I’m sure it will move your opinion towards that without question.

I personally prefer variety so I’d have multiple references. That said, if I were a one watch kind of guy, and I liked the Daytona it would be a fine choice

I have had a few on and waiting for a SS Daytona. Are you talking SS or PM Daytona?

Staying within the lane of the thread, I'd go multiples. Not that more is better. I'm not willing to pay the market rate for a Daytona.

Tough room to ask this question. I disqualify myself due to multiple watches. In marketing I always preached less is more to clients. Good luck

What does the value increasing have to factor into the decision. It should be a simple question, would you rather have one really awesome watch or multiple awesome watches. The market value shouldn’t be relevant yet it is because that’s all anyone talks about these days around here.

One of each would be the best option for a two watch collection.

The devil is always in the details. One Patek 5711 bought from the AD would make more sense than a bunch of Rolex sport models bought on the grey market and visa versa....a handful of Subs/Daytonas/GMTs or whatever from the AD would be a better investment than busting open the piggy for a Platona or whatever at current grey prices. In general I think that since you can only wear one watch at a time...better to have a one great piece than a bunch of lesser pieces but really all you need is one black Sub from the AD and you are in business...everything after that is gravy. But I would never spend a ton from a grey. I got all my pieces from the AD and will keep adding when he calls again with something I want and he can get. Slow and steady one or 2 pieces a year and it adds up to a nice collection I don't feel any guilt over.

Go multiples but the SS Daytona is the “tip of the spear” within a multiple collection if you can make that happen. All models have their own personality and some have a lot more swagger infused in their DNA. The cold hard reality in the Rolex sports watch world is, one model can easily be your one and only for life because of their durability and robustness. This is why I can’t really argue that they only have one Rolex in their collection what ever that model was that spoke to them the most. Forget value as this is a lifestyle choice and any Rolex model will hold their value regardless what you paid.

Over 30 years of Rolex and my standby recommendation if someone asks what model Rolex should they get and me thinking it’s going to be a one and only that embodies the Rolex look……A SS Submariner in what ever color/config. Most will be the happiest in life and traveling on vacation with a SS Sub.

Agree with Brian here. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life

However, there is no right and wrong here and best to go with what suits your personality.

I like variety. While I appreciate the value and the growth of value. I collect watches because I like them and admire the craftsmanship. These are truly pieces of mechanical art. The more the better.

Better for wearing or investment...kind of sounds like it's more about the money.

In my humble opinion a Daytona is not markedly better than a Sub or GMT and the explorer II ain’t far behind them. Serious diminishing returns with modern Rolex in this environment.

I’d say the guy with an explorer II has 95% of the experience of the guy with any Rolex reference.

I think you're overthinking it (even though it doesn't feel like it in the moment). I say that because for many tenured collectors, regardless of market conditions will consolidate for a 'grail' piece. Then after savings up again, the collection re-diversifies.

I’d rather have a few pieces to pick from rather than one Daytona. I think it’s a great looking watch but I wouldn’t want it as a one and only.

For your first piece just buy the one you really want. If you have money left you can think about others if not see how you like your one grail. If you get bored with just one watch then sell it and buy what you want. It’s quite simple and only you can answer the question and only time will tell.

I have a watch collection. I like it and I like wearing them in rotation. One overhyped model wouldn't be much of a collection for me.

I think I enjoyed my watch more when the only watch I had was a SS submariner. It was a graduation present to myself and it was my daily from 1996-2002. I started adding and trading watches after that and I may have a collection of more expensive watches but in truth I probably don’t enjoy them as much. If a Daytona is your grail, one Daytona is better than a handful of other SS professional watches.

Multiple Sports models or all the $ in one watch?

Less is more for me. I think the fewer watches you have the more content you will be with your choices and you'll actually wear them all.

Variety of color and brand in a small 3-4 piece collection is my vote.

I wouldn't sell a white Daytona and buy a bunch of other less expensive Rolex sport watches with the money. I would sell it to fund something objectively nicer that adds substance to your collection like a Lange or Vacheron though.

This has been my 2 watch rotation for a couple weeks. I don't even miss my other watches stashed away in the safe.

I've got a lot of steel sports rolex. As someone that owns the SS Daytona, and most of the catalog in steel sports... I honestly wouldn't one watch a daytona myself.

I think the polished center links, the brightness of the white dial (I can't speak for black, it's likely more versatile), its just a little bit more feminine, fancy and elegant. As a daily I much prefer the black sub. and then get something to complement that perhaps with something on jubilee for a little bit of flash.
