Datejust is the most Iconic Rolex ?

I mean whenever I wear my Datejust which is 2 tones, Jubilee, fluted Bezal most of my friend regconize it as a Rolex and ask me.

Not sure about other Rolex watches...even the Submariner.

And I'm Asian...

I think Datejust two tone may be the most recognized Rolex for normal people, even who don’t wear a watch.(particularly with fluted bazel)

But for people who wear mechanical watch, the most iconic Rolex may be sub, gmt or Daytona.

I would say yes, that or the submariner. That is why I love the GMT on jubilee, best of both worlds.

Well it's the DJ range is Rolex biggest sellers world wide the 36mm has been the most popular in Asia for decades,as for being iconic that's down to what that person thinks..

DJ is the best seller for sure over the years. The general public is exposed to that look more even in advertising.

I think the two tone DJ and the Sub are the most popular and recognized Rolexes.

As far as iconic goes, the DD stands alone.

The DD and DJ are the most recognisable Rolex models in the non WIS community and are synonymous with the brand. Even the fakes which outnumber the genuine ones in circulation.

People have mentioned the DD. For non Rolex people, I don’t believe that is true, unless there is a fluted bezel. Otherwise it is the jubilee bracelet that non Rolex people recognize in my opinion. You can’t see the “day” on the dial from a distance. I don’t even know if I would immediately recognize the president bracelet from far away.

Now if you say most desired or the watch to aspire to within the Rolex community, 100% I agree it is the DD. Regardless the cyclops makes it recognizable closer up to most people.

It comes down to the definition of iconic. If it is what best represents the brand, then I would have to say datejust. Or the sub with its heritage. Iconic within the watch community, probably the DD or even Daytona.

Would be interesting to see if this holds true 20 years down the line. The GMTs and Daytonas are so popular now, maybe they are the icons in the future.

Iconic for Rolex is probably - 1) cyclops 2) jubilee bracelet 3) fluted bezel 4) TT. So from that, I would have to say the DJ, especially if it is TT YG. Submariner a close second.

Regardless of how one personally feels about a certain brand or model, some watches are just more iconic than others, and the Datejust is up there (particularly certain variations).

If I would have an all iconic collection, it would be:

1) YG TT Datejust champagne dial, fluted + jubilee (maybe white dial, especially if you get 4 below).
2) Submariner LN (I would say no date but the cyclops is iconic so flip a coin)
3) GMT BLRO (I would say with the jubilee, but the PCL would complete the collection better and the first was on oyster).

After that, I would say:
4) All YG DD fluted
5) SS white dial Daytona (maybe black dial)

Mine looks like this

321 Speedmaster
126710 BLRO
124060 Submariner

Sorry for the thread Highjack OP

I will say, if I wanted a dressier piece the TT jubilee DJ41 silver dial would be my choice

I actually think Daytona is more iconic than the GMT (Even BLRO). Iconic to me would signify that even people who are not into watches would have a shot of recognizing it as a Rolex.

I think a GMT is just too generic looking of a sports watch to non-watch folks (And yes, I LOVE the GMT, but it's just nothing crazy special outside of how hard Rolex makes them to get).

1. Any DJ/DD with a Jubilee/Fluted combo...and I don't think this is particularly close and there is a big gap to #2

2. Black Sub

3. Daytona

I'd probably say it's the Submariner style watch. Very often copied as well.

The Datejust is a big seller but I don't think it's design has been copied that much. There's a ton of watches that look somewhat like it but when you see them you don't say, that looks like a Rolex.

With the Submariner you see that style and know it's either a Rolex or a copy of one.

That's probably my argument.

The Daytona fails my test of cyclops, jubilee and fluted bezel. I honestly don’t know how many people recognize the Daytona from other chronos. I could be wrong, I don’t know how we can actually test that either way. Please know the black Daytona SS is my grail!

The GMT to me is above the Daytona because you can have jubilee and has the cyclops. My favorite model is the submariner, but the GMT is close to the look of a sub and has the DJ jubilee look. The Pepsi adds even more iconic to it.

Though I do believe years from now Daytona and GMTs will both be very high on this list because of their current popularity. Either way it is a fun debate!

I am into watches, and before I started focusing on, and wanting a Rolex, I was not familiar with the DD. For me, OP, Submariner, Datejust and Daytona were all very familiar. Your average non-watch person knows nothing of the DD. I agree that the TT Datejust with fluted bezel is most iconic, followed by the Sub date. The Datejust is also
the best selling Rolex, which I presume we all know.

Out of curiosity, did a Google search to see what would come up.
Got this…….shouldnt we believe all we read on the Internet?

What is the most iconic Rolex?

Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The simple, elegant Oyster dates back to 1926 – and might just be the best Rolex ever. It was the first waterproof watch, its name inspired by the tight, sealing properties of an Oyster. A few years later came the term Perpetual, which refers to Rolex's patented self-winding movement.

In my opinion, going way back to the 60's and forward, the YG 36mm DD with Fluted bezel, champaign dial, and President bracelet was the iconic model of Rolex. Followed by the TT DJ also in 36mm, probably fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet. Then followed by the Submariner ND, mostly because of James Bond.
While the DJ was probably much greater in sales, the DD was iconic as the watch anyone who attributed Rolex to success aspired to. That made it the real iconic face of Rolex.
Many men received DJ's for 30 years of service to the company they worked for. But if they did, the person who was presenting that watch to them, the President of the company, was wearing a YG DD. Add to that, many Presidents of many countries wore YG DD's, etc, etc, etc.
To people that didn't really know watches they knew the Rolex DD by the look. It was always oozed wealth and success.
As far as the GMT goes for non watch people, unless you were military, a pilot, or a fan of Pussy Galore, you had no idea what a Rolex GMT was.

Only because it was the original Rolex.

I wonder if this is country or generation specific to an extent.

I’d say in the U.K., the datejust (especially TT) among the more “mature” and the submariner more so for younger people. I admit I’m probably putting the cutoff at about 60 so “young” may be the wrong word!

Day-dates, particularly yellow gold always had a “used car dealer” sort of connection to them. Maybe less so these days but certainly a number of years ago.

Think my stereotyping for the day is done.

your question is most iconic - for me iconic relating to Rolex is Submariner.
I love the Daytona, GMT most variants new and old, but when I think iconic and my age following Rolex for about 46 years, submariner hits the mark in my eyes ..

I hear what you are saying, but when it comes to recognizeable, it isn’t so much the name of the model but the characteristics IMO. You wouldn’t notice if the watch says GMT, Sub, Daytona, DD, etc. but you would notice the cyclops, jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel and TT. Most wouldn’t know any of the model names other than the brand name Rolex. GMTs look like subs from further away and the ones with a jubilee could be confused with a datejust. That being said the SDs could be included as they look like the submariner. I think it is the characteristics not the model that people could notice.

As a person who knew nothing about Rolex watches when I was young, who didn't know anyone personally that owned a Rolex, when you saw the YG DD from across the room, (usually on a big shot) you knew it was a Rolex. You knew it was expensive and not everyone could own one. You couldn't say that about the DJ or the Sub. I'm not talking about sales numbers, I'm talking about a non watch, non Rolex person being impressed/ in awe. It's always been the DD.
