Daytona and Tiffany OP, I'm Officially a Hypocrite

So I've done what I always said I would never do, and I'm 100% a hypocrite

Long story short, I've been on the 'list' for a black SS Daytona along with a Tiffany OP36 (wife) for quite some time. I say this as somebody who has an extensive relationship spanning 5 years with my AD, 6 figure spend across watches/jewelry, gold models, diamond and two tone models for my wife, the whole nine yards, hardly any sports model Rolex. I was inquiring about an update for those two and was legit told it would be 5-10 years for both. Mind you, my AD is also in a more rural area, not playing with billionaires in NYC or Miami. To say my wife and I were shocked is an understatement, I at least thought I'd have a serious spot or allocation in process, not the nice answer of 'you're not getting them'.

Quite frankly this lit a bit of a fire under my feet, so I reached out to a reputable grey seeing what kind of deal I could get cut for the pair. For years and years I always said I'd never do it, but I'm honestly just over it at this point. Came to an agreement (surprisingly good deal), and I'm getting fresh, September 2024 dated watches to arrive to my doorstep next week. Could have had them tomorrow but I'm in FL and got this crazy hurricane stuff going on.

I've now officially paid over retail for SS Rolex and you know what, it doesn't sting as much as I thought. Perhaps me recently paying over retail for my NOS 16600 was the catalyst to this, which made me realize, the time is more important than some extra money to buy what makes you happy. So never say never, as I was the textbook definition of somebody who said I wouldn't do it. I'm super content now with where my 'Land Sea Air' collection currently stands, will post some pics next week.

I've done grey. No shame in it. Congrats on the watches. I will probably go grey for a turquoise next year myself if I haven't gotten one yet. Congrats and stay safe in the hurricane.

Only thing left to do now is call your (hopefully former) AD and show them the math:

$ spent w/grey dealer - MSRP = $ spent on whatever they wanted to sell you

I was content playing the game to a point, and even alluded to another jewelry purchase. Still got this 10 year nonsense. Again, shocking as I’m an established client.

Glad you were able to get what you want! Worth it I think. Those watches are solid anyway, it’s not money down the tubes. And if your dealer ever comes through you can just get rid of them.
I’m supposed to be flying through Miami tomorrow

I did the same this year.

For the model i asked for... I'm a customer and I know customers who have spent $150k-500k at the same place... I had already waited two years and purchased other models they kind of hinted at me to start or continue relationship. My friends were bigger spenders than me and being told an extended wait time.

So i pulled the trigger.

I'm pretty sure i have to do the same with Patek sports too. Espeically with Patek classic prices being way way way down, it is inevitable i will go that route.

I think a great decision on your part! May I ask the grey dealer you contacted, I’m thinking of doing the same thing re: Daytona. Thanks!

Not sure why buying from a grey dealer is a dirty word? Who could possibly care where or how you buy the watch you wanted unless they are pathetically jealous and petty. Good for you taking action and getting it on your wrist.

Good decision.

One small question.

How can you pay over retail recently for a 16600 when there hasn't been a retail price listed for 15 years?

I also did the same this year for a Celebration OP36. Not because I was told I couldn’t get one - I knew I didn’t have enough spend history - but because a good friend at the same AD, who has bought easily 6 figures of watches - GMT, day date, women’s DJ, PM Daytona, other brands, etc etc - was basically told they needed to “buy more” jewelry, and had asked for ANY of the colored OPs and came up with nada. I was like no way do I want to buy a ton of stuff and not even know if I could even get one. So as many say here - life is short and the extra you paid is worth the time you saved and dropping the shenanigans. Stay safe the storm and hope to see wrist shots soon!!

I did the inflation calculator of what retail was 2008 would have had me at $6900 out the door, which is ~$10,000 today. I paid about 30% more than that, but got a NOS stickered 2018 one which was a special purchase by a Rolex employee. A few collectors told me it’s likely the last one ever sold!

I used BDHD in New Hampshire. Beat other Greys by a pretty significant margin and was a proper full set with a date of this month. In no way affiliated whatsoever just a great experience. I texted Leo directly to facilitate everything and he even sent me videos of the watch. Tell him Dustin sent you.

Haha this is true! I guess a small part of me still feels bad for fueling aftermarket pricing, but capitalism is what it is.

Shocked you couldn't get an OP 36 with that spend.

Either way, I think you made the right decision. I even think you bought at the bottom.

Congrats to you and the Misses.

I was too man. Granted the turquoise 36 is trading at double retail and one of the hardest to get pieces apparently, but still.

And yeah, I had mentally always said I’d be a buyer around $25k on a brand new Daytona and that’s what I almost got. So I’m content.

Thank you! Did Dustin happen to have it in stock, or did he go out and source the watches for you and then let you know once he had them in his possession?

No I’m Dustin, Leo is the guy who works there haha. I just said to mention me if you contact him.

No he had in stock, fresh, didn’t have to source. Was ready to ship as soon as I paid and sent me vids!

agreed...you got the watches you wanted, that is what we should be talking about. Who cares if they came from a grey dealer or an AD. Just post pictures when they arrive so we can enjoy what matters, the watches :-)

Daytona and Tiffany OP, I'm Officially a Hypocrite

Did exactly the same as you did OP. Black 126500 for my dad. OP36 turquoise for my wife’s birthday. Then my mom iked the OP so we got her a red OP36. All grey. My 126500 white also grey. Now waiting for my own OP36 yellow since I liked them so much!

Congrats enjoy in good health. I went grey for two watches three years ago, but I'm still worried they may have been stolen, not original, or date changed on card. These three reasons are what bother me when going grey. I won't be comfortable until I take them for the first service. I will still go grey in the future because I crave some models from Rolex and others that I know for certain I won't get from AD, I will just try to be very careful.

Firstly, congratulations on getting the watches you want at a price you're comfortable with - I wish you and your wife much happiness wearing them.

I confess I've always been baffled by reports of people spending xxx on items they don't really want in order to be 'allowed' to buy the watch of their choice, and still waiting months or years.

Surely paying the grey market premium makes more financial sense in most cases.

As for any shame in 'going grey', I really don't understand it: they have a role to play and bring a degree of equilibrium to an otherwise imperfect market.
