Sell a 5167 for a Lange at some point?

Hi all,

So I have been mulling the thought, ever since getting a Lange Annual calendar, now I am tempted to sell the aquanaut and perhaps get an 1815 Chronograph.
Yes they are completely different watches but I find I reach less for the Aquanaut and more for the Lange now days. Plus I have a ton do other sports watches. Now with Patek also just rating the aquanaut as a “run of the mill” 30m water resistant watch, I figure it’s not even really a sports model anymore?
Anyway, what would you guys do?
It’s just a small niggle of a thought and of course I will do as I feel, but just wanted to see what you guys all thought.

I would that in a second. The Lange chronograph movement is a joy to behold and is on a much higher horological level than a 5167. It's what you want to appreciate in a watch that matters.

Very nice project but indeed 2 very different watches.

First, I never really liked the Aquanaut (only the 5650 and maybe the 5968A, though too big for me). I had a 1815R in the past and enjoy Lange watches a lot.

I've been thinking myself about the Dato Perp in Pt which is at a very low price on secondary market for what it brings.

However, I would hesitate. I know on the long run that the watches that last on my wrist the longest are not always the "best" ones on paper. The comfort plays a huge role (caseback's shape, weight and size). The Dato (to my experience trying it several times, not owning it) is not good for me. However the 1815 chrono is. Nevertheless for an everyday wear I think many will prefer the Aquanaut on the long run. If I was an Aquanaut guy and not bored of it, I think I would keep it but that's very close. I would definitely keep a Nautilus.

If you want to experience finishing, the exquisite pleasure of a manual chronograph movement, go for it (not the AC but the Chrono).
If you want the finishing, getting a more elegant and traditional watch, go for any Lange, they are definitely worth it.

So my first opinion (above) is more about how you use your watch and what you want to find.

Regarding the WR issue, I still don't know how their measurement is supposed to be understood. I went to a Salon after the fair (April/May), they replied they didn't have yet an official answer from the HQ to give me. I didn't ask since. What I know from Patek is that the design of these watches didn't change (so if it worked before, it should still be working today).

The 1815 chrono is fantastic (I tried the WG black dial version a few months ago). It would be cool to be able to keep both :p The finishing is something very enjoyable to experience and is a valuable step for a watch fan to experience, to shape its observation accuracy. To build a good benchmark. It helps for instance avoiding feel that an RO movement (2120/3120) is the same than a 26-330 or 240 or that a Rolex is not far from an Aquanaut.

A nice step to make, keep us informed :)

If I were you I wouldn't do it, my friend.... You will regret it...

You will miss the thinness, lightness & etc of the 5167...

If force to trade, I would look into Patek 5070 or 5170 or 5172...

Good luck with you choice....

Two different watches, and looks like you don't have a rubber strap in your collection.

5167 may not be a watch for swimming or water sports, but it's a good enough watch for outdoor activities, which is close enough to a sports luxury watch. Honestly, I never use any of my luxury watches for any sporting activities, I use my garmin.

Right? I only discovered the 1815 Chrono after getting the 5167 and the movement... just... wow. Plus the pusher feel is just sublime.

Thanks for the thorough response!
Yes very much agreed, I need to think about what I am after and I keep coming to : "I want that sublime finishing and the interaction of the chronology pusher in my life".

I knew you would jump in! :D
It's just some thoughts for now and you are correct. I love the thinness! But I have been getting a lot of joy form my other watches and the 324 movement with no hacking seconds just annoys me sometimes haha cheap ass junk :P
BUT... I have my name on the papers of this one as you know I got it waaaay back in 2019. So that is a bit of a hiccup to be honest.

True, its the only "native" rubber strap sports watch I have in the collection. Good point!
Most exercise activities I don't have a watch, but for swimming, I love to have a watch on.

Your aquas ability for the water hasn’t changed.

There is no scenario I would let the aqua go for an ALS.

For what it’s worth, imho the 5167 combination of desirable attributes are rarely if ever seen in one package.

SUPREME LEGIBILITY for any watch, especially a watch that is not oversized.
120m Water resistance
8.2mm Thinness
~40mm
Balanced dial and overall design that will likely stand the test of time.

Find me another fine watch that does all of these things?

I am sure 30m even for diving is plenty for most. For me, I just generally won't use my luxury watch for water sports activities, as I like to use my garmin to measure my swimming laps.

5711 is one example I guess.

Happy to admire the movement of the 1815 chrono from afar but I don't need to own it myself. It would mostly sit in a drawer and I'd hardly use the chrono function anyway.

If I had gotten sick and tired of a 5167 (and I am not a big fan) I'd certainly consider selling but rather for another simple watch, say an FPJ CS or a RG C.

Almost. Once you start thinking about it, I find it is really a challenge to find competition.

while the 5711 legibility is very good compared to many is still not in the same league as the aquanaut

A Vacheron Overseas 3 hander does these things, adds 30m more water resistance, 20 hours more PR, strap changeability, adds anti magneticsm as well.

Made me look…
The current 3 handed w date on the VC website shows 10.69mm thickness with hands on the relative slender side. https://www.vacheron-constantin.com/...210a-b126.html

To clarify the 5167 hands have a very generous bit of lume and contrast allowing me to easily tell the time in the night.

I realize the things I highlighted are not everyone’s priority.

Legibility in the night has always been at the top of my list related to commonly working nights over the past 40 years. As well as meaningful water resistance.

My first Rolex was a brand new submariner with tritium. I have been spoiled from the beginning.

Dun get me wrong, i prefer my 5167A haha but just saying the VC OS is a strong contender for the specs you outlined.

I have both a 5167R and a 1815 chrono RG first generation. They are so different and don't compete in the same category. Even though I have the "R" version of 5167, I find it extremely versatile and the thinness on a rubber strap really gives the watch sublime wearability. It becomes essentially glued to your wrist and becomes a part of you when you put it on (best way I can describe it). I am sure you can relate.

The 1815 chrono on the other hand is all about the movement and finishing. I am still in awe every time I wear it and not sure I would part with it. It is also very wearable but definitely thicker compared to the 5167 so wears a bit differently. I wish I could pull off the dato but I can't because of the thickness and size. So 1815 chrono is the next best thing for me and my use.

In summary: Can't go wrong!

I would consider the 5170 over the 1815 chrono. More wearable and sleeker on the wrist.

Sell a 1[emoji239] for a Lange at some point?

My two cents is the ALS Chrono in a heartbeat.

I think it makes a lot of sense given your collection, and your evolving interests. You have plenty of other sports models to fill that need, and if you love the ALS annual calendar, then I bet you will get a lot of mileage over adding the 1815 chronograph.

If the 5167 came from an AD and your name is on the paper, then I’d hesitate. If not, trade away!
