Desired Acquisition Unexpectedly Obtained

Hey guys and gals; hope you're having a great horological day.

My recent Rolex story:

I've been wearing my two line no date 14060M Sub every day since gifted by my wife on our 25th anniversary in 2005 (I'm a retired US Navy Submariner). But I've envied other Rolex watches and have two sons, hence I require two watches of somewhat equal value.

I have been wanting a blue dial DJ41 for several years and have regretted not snapping one up before Rolex watches became hard to obtain. Upon retirement in December 2021 I began more seriously looking; however, as many know, most ADs were not optimistic.

We travel to Orange County CA frequently as my wife is from Newport Beach and still has family there. One AD and SA seemed to click and was straight up about availabilities but always seemed genuinely helpful. Each time we visited he would offer me different Rolexes but not what I wanted - I became concerned he would eventually stop working with me.

Last week I dropped in and was greeted by the SA who brought out a blue dial stick DJ41 18K white gold faceted bezel with oyster bracelet. I know he and my wife knew I was wide-eyed as it was exactly the watch I had hoped for. When he stated that it was available you could have blown me over with a feather. I think my SA may have enjoyed the sale as much as I did.

I'm so thrilled with it and have not worn my Sub since. My sons have not yet seen it or been told about it but I'm going to enjoy them trying to decide who gets which one when I can no longer wear them. I still need to set up my Wolf watch winder into which to place the current non-worn watch.

Just thought I'd share. I told the SA from the start that I was patient and it was about 2 1/2 years to get it. Under the circumstances I'm cool with that - the SA could've easily decided I was not a desired client. When I can figure out how to post pics, I'll post a reply here showing it.

You all be sure to treasure yours.

Great story. I think , though, that you should decide who gets what, after you can no longer wear them. Then, they can trade if they like, but there will be less pressure. I, too, am leaving a Rolex to each child, and have decided it’s the easiest way to avoid them fighting over who gets what. Congrats on your beautiful new DJ.

Ditto on patience's rewards. It becomes part of the story of the watch.

My wife shared that she fears it will displace my sub - it's so beautiful and a worthy partner to the sub. I have not taken the DJ41 off in a week now. Love the blue dial and it will turn my son's heads.

Functional, huh? Oh, wait, a MASH reference - good one. I actually enjoyed dreaming about getting this watch some day. Now I wear it.

Kat, your reply just missed my multi-quote, but thanks! While I don't wish to foment tension between my sons, I want them to get the one that they would like the best. Both sons are great and they absolutely do not squabble nor ever have.

I'm just not sure I could accurately guess which son would prefer which watch. They both love blue but both have eyed my sub for almost two decades. But now any pressure of one getting a watch and the other not is relieved with two watches (I should have had more kids so I could justify collecting more watches).

One was in the Navy and has been submerged on submarines but is now a big law attorney while the other is working in the submarine industry. I'm guessing that my oldest might lean towards the DJ41 to wear under his suit in the law practice while my youngest might prefer the tool watch and sub connection with his work on subs.

I'm sure their mother who is entirely impartial will help them decide when I can no longer wear them.
