Tudor submariner 66 dial question
this is a submariner from 66
the dial says T Swiss T, so tritium I suppose Is this (water) damage to this dial, or just aging? thx

'66 was tritium (t swiss t) chapter ring with silver writing (b.t.w, roughly '63 was the end of the 'swiss' radium and '67 ushered in the non chapter ring) . Gilt hands with big blob s/h is unusual find if correct. They can age quite a bit, but I suspect some moisture in the equation....the white around 10 HR and the scratch / mark through Small Rose and R of TUDOR are a bit of a shame/worrisome, but might be marks on acrylic.

The scratch is not on the acrylic btw, is this due to unprofessional watch makers?

The dial has damage, maybe being improperly stored. Something damaged the surface. Post a complete photo of the watch. I can tell that the bezel insert is quite new. If you are about to buy it then you should share all of it as many of these are parted out and rebuilt and sold with a mix of new and old

I don't recall a normal aging like that but not having macro pictures, can't be sure. It might be similar to a funky way lume ages/attracts fungus common on 66-68 Tudor/Rolex/Omega lumes (I suspect it was same lume provider) that plus some combination of moisture does that. There is some damage to the dial surface.

Okay, but the dial is so rough, is that damage or is was this like this when it was so produced?

Damage. I would wager Tudor would never sell a watch with a dial that looked like that. How the damage occurred is open to debate but most likely water intrusion as many have already said. With that scratch on the dial either the watchmaker who repaired it at some point was very clumsy or this dial was in a watchmaker's drawer for a number of years slowly accumulating wear and tear from opening and closing. I'm going with @linesiders fungus theory too, seems like a good option given the Last of Us… It's a damaged dial.

here's a better example, the dial isn't smooth either, but looks undamaged.
The lume is also greenish

This looks to be a variation of the lume mold/fungus common from 66-68 Omega/Tudor/Rolex. If it is priced right and it appeals to you, go for it. If this is high market pricing might be worth to pass.
It doesn't look bad, just takes a hit on value Hands are different here. Dial surface looks much improved/ What happened?

That second watch looks much better. The lume is a little dirty, but I bet it looks good to the naked eye.

There could be lots of things going on with that first watch. But all is speculation unless the owner (not a dealer) explains it.
Water, mildew, mold, mistreatment during service, and carelessness. Each watch tells a story by the lines across its face and the damage to it too. Like people, no two are alike. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

The crown guards of the first watch are also very asymmetrical. That would bother me too, something must have happened in the past.
You can see it clearly in the first picture. |
