GMT Master II or Submariner Date

Hi all, i'm on the verge of buying my first rolex and after initial research i've narrowed it down to two alternates, the GMT master II or Submariner Date, (both s/s). The prices down here in Aus are very similar and obviously very similar looking watches, but i'm torn as to which is the better watch.
Any advice or comments are welcome.

I would personally go for the gmtii but I am biased. they are practically same watches in terms of looks (unless you are talking the coke/pepsi and not the ceramic version) but gmt has an extra function of second timezone. That said you cannot go wrong with either. good luck

I personally do not care for the polished center links on the GMT IIC. My vote goes to the Submariner! A little less busy on the rotating bezel too!
But, both are sweet watches........you are in a win win situation in my book!

Check some other threads on the site. There are some great discussions.
I might suggest you try both on though. What looks good to you? Then make the plunge. Happy buying.

Just be aware the GMT with PCL is very easily scratched, no matter how careful you think you are.

If this is going to be your only Rolex, I'd go for the Sub. Otherwise, either one as your first is just as good.

I would go for an explorer II case 42 mm, because even if I like the Sub best, it was a big size watch 20 years ago. Today it looks kind of small (even the supersized case).

I bet in a few year, Rolex will upgrade all its watches to 42 mm over.

I have recently gone through the same conundrum.

I went for the GMT II albeit in gold and steel with the ceramic bezel. I never liked the GMT coke or pepsi bezel look and have been waiting for the upgrade for a while.

My view is that I will now add to my collection with a vintage sub with the tritium cream coloured markers which I can't do with a GMT because of the blue and red or black and red bezel which I just can't handle.

Plus the GMT is very useful when travelling with the hour hand moving independently and not stopping the second hand thus keeping accuracy when changing time zones. And of course the 24 hour hand for keeping check of time back home.

All in all a fantastic watch

Had that dilemma too years ago, Kids in college you know.
It was a choice between GMT II or a Sub. Choice was made based on practicality. I went then for a GMT II basically due to its ability to track time in 2 time zone ( useful in my job then).
Decide on what will be of more use to you currently, then that will console you till you buy the Sub.

Not sure if you are talking GMTIIc vs SUBc, or non-ceramics of both. But the "c's" both wear and look different than non c - and I can't wear the c. So as others said, try them on for both look and feel.

I've got both, but if I could only have one it would probably be the Submariner. There is something about the larger crown that I just really love. The GMT II is a close second though.

I'd be careful that the sub in question is a sub-c (i.e. ceramic bezel). If it's an older submariner, I'd definately go with the GMT IIc.

If it is a sub-c then try both on and see which feels better to you. You can't go wrong with either a GMT IIc or a Sub-c in my opinion.

I've got a GMT IIc and love it (polished centre links are still intact after about 9 months except for the clasp).

Personally I think the green 4th hand gives it something over the sub but that's just personal taste.

i had the same dilemma. i chose the sub-c because it's less flashy and in your face then the bezel of the gmt. i've been wearing it for a week now and none of my colleagues commented on it. i reckon they'd have noticed the gmt.
i'd love the gmt function on a watch but the pclessness and the clasp of the sub just sealed the deal for me.
of course if you plan to buy more watches or have several others, or you like more flashy pieces, the situation is different. i was looking for a watch i'd surely like 20 years from now.

The diver bezel is more usefull and the biger crown more comfortable. In case you don't need GMT function.

For C versions is the argument about the size of the crowns not valid.

The GMT function is very useful but I personally don't value much the current GMT green hand. So I would try and find a recent Pepsi or other GMT with a red hand.
For the PCL, it can be fixed very easily if you don't like it. Just use a scotchbrite.
