Am I getting hosed on my Date?

So my first post for TRF was about me buying my first Rolex and how I had it on layaway.

Now, it begs the question because now I've been thinking about it. I went to the Manhattan Jewelry Exchange down here at Sawgrass Mills, about 30 indepedent jewelers lease spots in the store there.

I found a watch dealer who deals in nothing but watches and he had a stunning display of Rolexes. I found my Date (even though I wasn't shopping for a new watch, just wanting to drool a bit.) and because I don't believe in buying jewelry with credit, I asked if he would work with me on a layaway plan. I have 5 months to pay it off (I've already knocked out 70% of it though).

It's a brand new Date, with the red Rolex seal on the band still there and the red line across the holograph, the etched crown is visible through the loupe, and is perfect, also includes the appropriate Rolex paperwork and box.

The price was $4000, and then got the song and dance about the 15% off yada yada yada. Which brought it down to $3400.

My question to you all is... for a brand new Date, with box and papers, a F serial number at the price of $3400, am I getting a good deal, making out just right or getting hosed?

Nice watch! I think you are right where you should be grey market.

If it were used, different story as the date model does not have high re-sale, but for new you are good. Could you have gotten a better deal? Maybe. But you could also have paid more too.

If your price includes tax, then even better.

I think you could have got your watch for $2,000 or less, but I understand that is a new watch. It is true that resale is not high on that Rolex model, but buy what makes you smile.

Hey Chimpy,

Isn't Sawgrass Mills near Jax or St Augustine? Ponte Vedra Beach maybe?

Nice watch! Love the blue dial.

If I remember correctly, it is the size. The DJ is a bit bigger in diameter.

But there are smaller DJs.

Are you saying that the biggest Datejust - at 36mm - is bigger than the biggest Date - at 34mm - and that's really the only difference?

I love the watch and in the end if it makes you happy then great!

But, if I was shopping for this watch I would have gone pre-owned - thus a ton cheaper. Although this one is "new", it's still an F series, which means it's been around for at least 2 years maybe as many as 4. That's not a problem, it's just I would have shopped a bit to find a like-new/used Date or DJ for a better price.

For reference, I bought my wife's SS D series (new style & 2 months old at the time) DJ for $3,800 and it was in minty new condition. I could have got another "D" DJ for less ($3,600ish), but I really wanted a specific dial, so the extra $200 was nothing at that point. Keep in mind this was in November 2006 - before the price increase was really felt on the used market.

I agree with you about not buying on credit, but I just save the money and then go make the purchase. That way I can shop around and change my mind during the savings process.

If you had put it on a credit card, you'd be doing far worse. Sounds like you did ok on the price.

3600??3800?? If this was my spending budget, I would have been able to find 2 Rolex SS datejust at roughly $1500 each!
