I was a little confused after seeing a thread by 'Thomasin' entitled 'Discount from AD' dated 17 April 2020. The question:

"Hey! I once again need your help:-)
I have decided to get a datejust 41 in rhodium with a fluted bezel and an oyster bracelet. Should I expect any discount on this model? I am buying from an AD.
I hope you can help!"

For someone seemingly new to the forum, as am I, I thought he had a legitimate question asking for members opinions. It seemed quite a logical thing to ask in my mind.

Following a comment from another member stating among other things the question was "annoying and silly" the thread was locked after a short time with the last comment by facilitator 'Lol-x' stating:

"I couldn't agree more
These thread will be closed and consequences for those asking 'discount' questions.
No more threads asking:
prices or discounts."

Can anyone tell me what the problem is in this instance?

Easy.

Why are you asking us when you should be asking your Authorized Dealer

Maybe because he wants the opinions of Rolex experts on their dealings with ADs? At one time or another we were all rookies with no watches about to enter into this expensive insane hobby. It’s a legitimate ask of a forum with a vast amount of experience. Probably would have been more appropriate to just private message a moderator than to post this threat but do as you wish.

Isn’t it common sense that if you’re not getting the deal you want from a seller that you would seek it elsewhere.

Oh, I never know that we cannot ask about discount at ADs in this forum. Actually I think it's very good question for our consumers.

I am waiting to hear a good explanation too.

With respect...it's better to go into a deal with as much information as possible. If you are new to the subject it is prudent to ask people with knowledge of the subject to get that information before entering into a negotiation.

Maybe it was locked because we have too many important and urgent topics to cover here, and that question didn't qualify as deserving your time. Otherwise, I don't know why it was locked, maybe the OP is someone with multiple Forum ID's or perhaps some previous violations on the forum restricted the OP's access. My guess.

Respectfully, say I tell you I get 20% discount consistently on any watch from an AD. You go to the AD and ask them for the same 20% discount. They say no. How did me telling you that I get a 20% discount help you?

Just remebered why I kept away from forums. Its the hypersensibity of some of its memebers, who need to show off their grades and veteran status by getting picky and silly.

There is no one answer to the 'Can I get a discount' question. Each persons negotiation ability is different and each ADs willingness to negotiate is different. Plus this question has been asked and answered so many time on this forum that the admin has decided to put an end to further inquiries.

Good luck.

I always start out saying 'EVERYONE on the internet said I would get a 20% discount'

I've never been sold a watch and only been tasered twice. One of these days it's going to work.

Lol-X (Steve) is the owner of the forum. Why don't you PM him directly? As he already gave his answer, are you sure you want to ride this train? Personally I would just accept his rules are final. And not question them.

Just found this. Needs to be a sticky?

We will be taking a hard line on the following (and like) threads:
Prices going up?
Prices going down?
Is this price reasonable?
Is this a good investment?
Can I get a discount & how much?
Is now the right time to buy/sell??

Unfortunately there seems to be a fair bit of this happening.
It is a pity that very experienced members that have so much to offer, even bother to comment, unless they have something positive and worthwhile to say.

Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, BENZ Forums all have a section for quotes, pricing, rates, lease numbers, MF, resid #s etc ...

But remember, a Rolex is in a category of its own. It’s as essential as toilet paper and N95 masks and God forbid a pleb asks or obtains a discount on any piece.

Aside from above I’ll keep my mouth shut. I often wonder why I keep coming back. Glutton for punishment I suppose...

I'm baffled as to why someone would only ask for a discount if a forum full of strangers told them to. But then again, we get posts along the lines of "please tell me what to buy".

As to why it was binned, the mods have spoken. That's how forums work. Take note and move on.

Urgent and important topics related to a wristwatch.

I truly and absolutely hope my sarcasm radar hasn’t been damaged during quarantine.

I didn't see that. Yes, it should be a sticky IMO. A rather embarrassing pointer to the mentality of the times we live in, but it has the potential to flush a lot of rubbish from this community. No bad thing.

I agree with you.

I guess mods grew tired of the same threads.

But if that’s the case, they should close the investment threads too

Because I know a mod or two that get annoyed by those

Interesting, I didn’t know the forum was owned by one person.

Or owned at all

That’s not the way it works, everyone knows that.

I think by knowing a discount you go in knowing what is a fair price. If you don’t like the price you can go somewhere else.

Hey, but seriously, it’s cool that the mods are also going to close investment threads.

Those usually end up in arguments anyway.

In general, rules are rules, if you don’t like them you don’t have to be on the forum

Usually I would agree, but the general discussion forum has so many of these pointless threads lately that the good threads are lost in a sea of investment and discount questions.

I'll be glad to see the end of every one of the threads Steve listed.

I know it gets frustrating when the same posts are started repeatedly.

On the other hand, couldn't such information, when shared by established forum members and experienced buyers, be the type of metadata that allows new members and Rolex buyers to make good purchasing decisions?

I think that's all most new members are looking for.

Lots of new cars are bought this way these days, for one example.

Creating threads asking 'Can I get a discount from my AD?' can only be relevant to other members if they are familiar dealing with your AD. Thus for the vast majority of members it is an irrelevant question as they cannot respond meaningfully.

If you want to find out if you can get a discount from your local dealer then you can speak to others who are located proximate to you and do so by personal message.

This obsession with prices, discounts, investments is not discussion about watches. These issues can be determined by privately looking at prices for watches sold past and present and doing your own private research.

The Rolex discussion forum is for the interesting discussion of Rolex watches, not about prices being high, low, up, down which is not to those who are genuinely interested in the discussion of watches a topic of any significant use or interest.

It is Rule 4(iv):

This post ^^^ means you can figure it out if the answers don’t help you.

Good luck with the hunt, and remember AD’s are retailers but also people. Price is the last question and be ready to buy there and then.
