These two watches I sold to someone in Philippines. He paid funds into my paypal account

I withdrew cleared funds

3 months later I get a chargeback

this is when funds issuer takes back moneys from my paypal

I am liable for repaying my overdrawn paypal account otherwise the debt will be recovered by collection agency

I lost two lovely watches and £2.5K

One is a 1980 ref1500 oyster date, the other a 1990's Datejust. I have reported them stolen to rolex L&S register...

Well, paypal did their investigations (apparently) and because I sold the watches to a non-verified paypal member I was not protected under the paypal rules...All in the small print somewhere...! Perhaps one day sometime one of these watches will go in for a Rolex service and will be seized!!

This is why you should NEVER, EVER use PayPal. PayPal is only good for two things: eBay and screwing you over. I've heard stories like this before and even stories where PayPal just randomly takes money out of people's accounts. One of my friends lost several hundred dollars because the money in her account was not money she earned from eBay.

I'm sorry to hear your story. Hopefully the thief is caught.

Guys, it happens every day.

In fact, just for kicks, advertise one of your Rolexes on Craigslist, the end all, be all of scammer world. It will amaze you at how many full price offers you will get out of Europe, and how many excuses you will get for them using PayPal only. And they always want the watch shipped to a "friend, girlfriend", or some other such s@#$.

Don't fall for it - and I am sorry it happened to you, Shaun. I hope you get what's yours (the watches), and they get what's theirs (an up close and personal introduction to some real pain)

Sorry to hear this but thanks for sharing your story. It is scary to hear that a non-verified paypal user can screw you. I've used paypal many times before for purchasing & selling and had plans to sell my Navi World via paypal. I will make sure the buyer is a verified paypal member first before using paypal.

I was a regular seller on Ebay since 1999. I did not sell watches, but other collectibles. I never took PayPal payments, always checks, money orders, etc. When Ebay went to mandatory PayPal, I decided it was time to stop selling. Go to Ebay Seller Central and you'll have your eyes opened.

Unbelievable. I cannot fathom how Paypal is allowed to do this, especially three months later. I naively, but honestly, thought that Paypal was a service that would protect the seller from fraud.

They did it to me too!

I can't stress enough...don't use Paypal. Please do a wire transfer, it is the only way. 3 months later and they did this is really fishy. Paypal didn't want to feel left out and wanted on the transaction. You got your money, buyer got watches and Paypal figure they do this and get it to collection. They will sell off your debt and get their money.

Imagine if they did this to a thousands of thousands of people, it would be another source of income for them.

Good luck and I would contact Paypal.........

How can this be justified????

As far as i am concerened Paypal have lost me as a user from this one story and i would hope that you guy's do the same.

I have never felt comfortable using them, it has always been a last resort to use them. Can't put my finger on why i feel like this, i just do.

Tri-Nation-Man, i hope that Lady Luck is shining down on you and you get the watches back.

As for the Dckiless piece of Stih that did this, you WILL get yours!!!!

Thank you for posting your story. No doubt it will shock a few people, starting with myself, and serve as a reason for re-considering using PayPal services - at least for the non-eBay transactions.

some Paypal experiences in the last 2-3 years...

1) I paid $800 for an Ohlins rear shock for a motorcycle. I received an Ohlins STICKER in the mail... the seller did this to about 5-7 people. PAypal sided with the seller, because he had proof he sent "something".

2) Paypal security informed me my "Tommy Gun" helmet I sold on eBay was considered a prohibited item (because guns aka Tommy Guns are illegal to sell via paypal) and they were going to terminate my account of 10+ years.

3) Countless chargebacks from sellers, ranging from $150 - $1500..... there is NO security, and NO protection at all.. you are at the mercy of the other person you are doing the transaction with.. but, sometimes you gotta break a few eggs..

I all fairness and balance, I have used PayPal for over 10 years without one glitch. I have heard and do believe the horror stories I have read over the years and have read paypalsucks.com beginning several years ago. It is disturbing.

I said that to say this. PayPal is not a bank and therefore you have no Federal recourse as you would with a bank. This is a given. But, as with all transactions, you must buy the seller if you are a buyer and buy the buyer if you are a seller in each transaction. I have to wonder what percentage of these PP hardships could have been avoided with a measure of discretion and caution. No offense intended and I do empathize with anyone who has lost via PayPal.

If you want a "safer" and more controllable alternative to PayPal there are many online credit card servicing companies that will hook you up with a "merchant account" allowing you to receive cc payments and are subject to Federal Banking laws.

If PP doesn't work for you then try another way. They are out there and plentiful. I know this doesn't help you with any current dilemmas, but perhaps it has been helpful anyway.

I am really sorry to hear this happened to you.
