A Pan Am Pilot’s 6542

Hello, I rarely come here to recommend a story. But I’ve just finished researching and writing about the man (on the right) in the ad. It turns out he wasn’t just any Pan Am pilot, he had an amazing career. I was able to interview his family, and I found his watch!!!

That ad is still used today on Rolex website and can be (briefly) seen on Rolex latest social media posts advertising the new GMT.

My story (just published today) here:

https://www.rolexmagazine.com/2023/0...ence-jooj.html

I hope you like it.

Lovely piece Danny. I too have researched the background to Glycine Airman and 6542 GMT, and the Chrysler Tower meeting between Pan Am mgt and Rolex Mgt in 53/54. I was particularly interested in how the blue/red bezel came about and was informed by a lady who was there, that it was to mimic the AI (attitude indicator) of the DC6/7, used by Pan Am at the time.

A great piece - thank you. I'm afraid that I'm old enough to remember some of those 1950s Pan-Am adverts. It was this sort of Rolex publicity, along with World leaders such as JFK and Henry Kissinger featuring in Rolex adverts, that established my awareness of the brand and led to me buying my 1675 GMT in 1967. Thank you again for what is, to me, a great nostalgia piece.

Stan.

I read this yesterday. How cool is that. It’s nice that the family still retains it. Thanks for the article. I still one day want to own one of these, preferably an all gold version.

..and great story Danny. Was a fan of Pan Am during the 60's and 70's while growing up. A passenger a few times out of Idlewild Airport.

....Kind of a funny story (or not) of my affiliation with PanAm...
While growing up..as a youngster and still living at home, my Dad, recommended that I sell my meager amount of shares in PepsiCo and buy into PanAm.. So not knowing any different and leaning on my Dad's advise, I sold my PepsiCo shares and bought PepsiCO.... Well, ..what can I say.
.. Let the facts tell the story of my woe...! - Water under the bridge....

Love the articles and research you all put into them. Thanks for sharing.

Side note…. Can you all fix the podcasts? iTunes doesn’t play them anymore probably because they’re were uploaded in 2008. They are old but there was some fantastic content in them.

[QUOTE=Haywood_Milton;12592107]Great post; thankyou for sharing.

Here's Pussy wearing hers :

The image above of Honor Blackman wearing a GMT-Master is FAKE!!!!!!

It was created by an online publication because they could not find any previously unpublished photos of her wearing her GMT-Master, so they created and published this fake composite image.

You can see the original image that was used for making the composite image here:

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/showbiz/...james-21823289

You can see many REAL images of Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore in the James Bond movie titled Goldfinger wearing her GMT-Master here:

Wow!

Very happy to be corrected re that Honor Blackman photo, thankyou. Shall not use that again!

Also delighted to see some of the other images in your article. Thankyou for the correction and that publication.

I can guarantee that the picture of the Bakelite 6542 on the hairy, middle-aged English jeweller is authentic ;-)

I wonder what the watch in the original photo was. Looks like maybe a Patek or an Eternamatic.
