Two Watch Collection SS/PM

I go back and forth if I want a 4-5 collection or just two pieces that I love.

I really enjoy my 12 series sub date. I would have it in every flavor and not be bored.

Recently I’ve been flirting with the idea of a solid gold sub to join my stainless, or a day-date.

We have just relocated to Florida and we visited the local AD for the first time. Great experience with them so far. Very nice, very accommodating. Seemingly honest about how many people are awaiting the same watches.
Not that it was a surprise.

It was also the first time I had my ultimate configuration for a DD on my wrist.
40mm, black dial, non-diamond marker in YG.

Really hard seeing myself with a two sub collection after getting to see the DD in the flesh.

We ended up leaving with a few complementary goodies and my name on the “list” for a DD and my wife for a YG white dial Daytona.

Those of you with a SS/PM collection. Were you content with the two piece assortment. Or did you yearn for more variety after some time?

I’ve got a BLNR and my father’s DD 36 from the early 80s that he wore until he gave it to me on my first Father’s Day as a father a few years ago. I honestly don’t wear the DD often as it’s a bit formal for my style, but I love it.

I started with a SS gmt, 116710 in 2008. I always wanted the full gold model, but it wasn’t even remotely in reach at that stage of my life.

In March 2018, I was able to acquire the 117618. In hindsight, at a fantastic price. It was my grail. In the past 6 years of ownership there have definitely been periods when I didn’t wear full gold much and I even thought able selling it at one point. It’s a flashy piece to wear. However, I do love it.

In October 2018, I received a 116500 black dial from my AD. I sold the SS gmt 116710 when the Daytona arrived.

The 116718 and the 116500 are my only two Rolex since then (2018-2024). I’ve almost bought a 3rd a few times, but it would be SS and just wouldn’t compare to either the SS Daytona or gold GMT. One day I will add a 3rd but at this point I have other priorities.

Over the years, I’ve acquired the oysterflex and super jubilee bracelets for my Daytona so I have three options for my SS piece. They all wear ver differently.

I’m a big advocate for the 1 SS and 1 PM. I’d say it’s the best “wearers collection” with a reasonable cash outlay. I wear one of them everyday. Mostly the Daytona, but the GMT is great too.

That GMT is beautiful.

I would love a Daytona, but they wear pretty small on me with a bracelet. (If my wife ends up getting one, I’ll steal it and add some links in for a while).

I see a lot of comments about the DD being dressy. I see that thing as a wear it with anything type watch. My life is flip flops and shorts now. (Looked great in the mirror at the AD)

I think the YG sub is a little bit cooler. I’d say get that now. But you’re going to wind up with a day date too.
Maybe get the sub used tho.. save some money.

I’m in the same boat.

I always thought I’d prefer a 4 or 5 piece SS collection. But now I’m thinking a solid gold Sub, my GMT BLNR, and my Speedmaster could be a perfect collection. I’d essentially dump 3 of my current watches to get a solid gold Sub.

I like Day Dates, too. So a variation would be to have a SS Sub, a DayDate, and a Speedmaster.

I’m just not sure yet.

I like your thinking.

Personally when I’ve had 5 + watches in my collection I’ve experienced less enjoyment than when I’ve had 1-2 that are truly special.

Since i bought my Day-Date, the Submariner was on my wrist for no more than 6 days. That good and special is how a YG Day-Date is. And rest assured, you can wear one easily from sweat shorts to a tie.

When I started I had a SS Submariner and was fortunate enough to get a YG Daytona with a white dial. I had the duo for a number of years and was completely satisfied. I also had a Timex Ironman for work when required. I have since added mutiple watches and have a large collection of both expensive watches and not so expensive watches. For the OP, I would go with the YG Submariner living in Florida. The Glide Lock Clasp is a work of art and is going to give you a perfect fit every time you wear the watch. The DD is a great watch and I have owned them all but in the end I have never been able to make peace with the bracelet and the lack of adjustability, except adding or removing links. Florida also, to me, is a real Submariner vibe place. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

When I ended up adding PM to my lineup it didn't stop me from eventually adding more.
It does make for a great duo though!

I lead a very active life I’m 38 and we have two young kids. My Rolex isn’t a safe queen. She goes in the ocean, she gets covered in what ever the hell the mystery sticky stuff is on my kids hands.

I think I’d have more pause with the DD than I would with a YG sub. It’s not that i actively seek to wear my sub to the beach but it does happen. Having the DD on would probably stop that spontaneous move.

It’s not that I would treat a YG sub just like a stainless, I’d say that I’d be lying to myself if I thought it didn’t get babied a little.

But I’d probably baby the DD significantly more seeing how polished and how hard the pres bracelet would be to keep clean?

How far am in off in that logic?

a yg sub's bracelet will actually show wear much more than a day date because the links are so large and flat and because PCLs get scratched by everything including clothing. the president bracelet will show far less scratches because the links are smaller and rounder

I probably wouldn’t, at least not at this point, but if I were to have two Rolex….it'd be my 116600 or a sub (not but not black/black), and one of my dd40’s. IMO, dd’s can be worn with basically anything.

If you’re sticking with Rolex, I think an ss and gold 2 piece is a great idea.

As much as I love the gold sub, if you’re keeping the 12 series date, I’d definitely go with the DD.

That right there would pretty much be the most iconic combo you can have from Rolex.

I love the idea of having just two watches, and personally sharing Your sentiment I'll probably end up with two subs out of all watches I have had over years, and I do mean 12 refferences, they do wear just perfect!

Sounds like you’ve put together a great start to a collection, and I totally get the dilemma! I think a two-watch collection of SS and PM can be very satisfying if they complement each other well. I have a stainless Sub Date and a YG Day-Date, and I find they cover pretty much every situation I’d want. The Sub is perfect for day-to-day and more rugged use, while the Day-Date brings in that bit of luxury for dressier occasions.

That being said, the YG Sub also sounds like a fantastic addition, especially for Florida. It would give you that bold look while still being versatile enough for most occasions. Personally, I think a Sub/DD duo is a classic pairing that brings balance between sporty and elegant.

In the end, go with the piece that speaks to you the most! Either combo will be a solid two-watch collection, but make sure it’s something you’ll genuinely enjoy wearing over time.

I like your logic and reasoning. The YG and SS Submariners now would be a great two watch collection and down the road, when the children are older and you are doing less spontaneous activities add a DD for the perfect three watch collection.

Yes! I’ve tried the 11 series and got to have about an hour with a 12 series.

I loved the 19LB sub. Seeing that I got a SS already a lot of the allure faded for the WG, they’re just too close visually. I’ll never get rid of the SS, my 6 year old already claimed it.

If there was a screaming deal on a 12 series I’d really put consideration to it, but I don’t think they will be in the high 20s again for that to make sense with two white metal subs in the collection.
