Rolex Oyster Case shapes/lugs slightly different between models?

Hello, I have scoured the internet and cannot find anyone asking this question. I just recently acquired a 1971 Rolex 5500 and I noticed that while the 5500 has sharper lines that the lugs are thinner looking and not as long as my rolex 1500 which is a 1969. Did rolex use slightly different versions of their oyster case for the air king vs the date? I guess I always assumed most oyster cases during similar years and size (34mm) would have been the same.

No one knows if the air king 5500 and the Rolex date 1500 used different cases?
