*First Rolex Submariner off of Craigslist?*

Hi Fellow Rolexers,

I wanted your expert advice on a purchase that I am planning on making soon (or not depending on what you guys say). I've been eyeing a Rolex Submariner for sometime now and found one off of Craiglist. Now I know that is automatically a red flag, but this one seems like it could be legit. I've been saving up money now for a year and finally can afford to buy one. I am buying it for $2200 but it looks like it needs some replacement of parts. No box or papers and the owner only knows that it is around a 1980 watch. I have little to no knowledge in Rolexs, so hoping some of you can tell me if:

1) If it is real or not (1980 model)
2) Is it a bargain to buy and fix up at the price of $2200

Thanks for your help guys!!! This is the best forum in the world

Jason

After-market bezel. The rest looks ok....as far as one can tell from these pics. Can you take it to a watchmaker to have a look inside? If it's genuine then it's a good price.

I was just under the assumption that he/she had a submariner and changed it to a pepsi bezel! Goes to show how oblivious I am.

Well not exactly. It has no GMT hand. It is a Sub but the bezel is in Pepsi colors of a GMT. The numbers on the bezel also belong to a Sub. Meaning a inbreeding bezel

Is it fake i don't know, i'm far from a expect. Is it 100% authentic. No!!!

I should go with old expert beast said. Walk away

Terrible fake. Look at the chapter ring (would be closer to 60's)

It also has SEL bracelet , also not correct until 2001ish

Bezel aggghh

Fonts on dial too small and squished... Compare to another pic and you will see.
Crown is too far down from the 12 marker

There's more... But that should be enough for you

No expert here but those who are, please correct me if needed. This watch has a Pepsi bezel with Submariner minute markings. The Pepsi bezel was made only for the GMT and would have 24 hour markings, not 60 minute and certainly would not have a pearl. So, not only is the bezel aftermarket, it's a horribly incorrect one. The watch head and bracelet might be legit but I doubt it.

apart from the glaringly obvious bezel dial inbreeding something about the marker surrounds don't look right to me , gaps at the 6 o'clock end links too
needless to say enough things going on to warrant walking away with your 2k IMHO

OP, you are better off saving up a few more dollars and buying a genuine pre-owned Rolex from a trusted TRF seller, than combing the ads of ebay and Craiglist, which have so many fakes it is hard to believe. There may be genuine Rolexes on these auction sites, but inexperienced buyers should avoid those sites for luxury watches.

It really depends on why you want a Rolex. If you just want the name on a watch, then you can buy a fake off a street corner and save thousands. If you want one for the reliability, history, and durability, then save up for a real one. Best of luck.

Let's set aside the watch you posted for a second.

Unless you have money to burn I'd suggest you personally should
Not seek the lowest priced Rolex you can find. As another poster
Mentioned, you're going to have to save more money if you want
A submariner. The bright side is that through this forum you'll likely
Find the absolute best price in the market.

Rather than search cl anymore for a unicorn that doesn't exist, or
Might potentially rob you, work more and save the extra money.
The same applies to ebay.

Sorry, you are wrong!
The rest looks 100% fake as well

To the OP: If you can't identify this watch being a fake (even I can...), you should not be looking for one on CL.

Many things wrong and nothing adds up. Case, Crown guards, Dial, Bezel, and SEL... Impossible for it to be a submariner, more impossible for it to be 1980s.

You have a better chance being abducted by aliens or winning the lottery than buying a genuine vintage Rolex off ebay or Craigslist for $2200.

I'm assuming you don't have a lot of money. Stick around, save up your money, and buy a pre-owned from a seller on this website. You will thank us. Why? For saving you from wasting your hard-earned money on fakes.

Everything is wrong with that watch.

It's not a Sub or a GMT.

It's a nothing.
