Positive problem: what to do with BLNR

This is definitely a first world problem. The story is that I put my name on batman list back in 2016, then last Basel time I called then and asked to swap my queue position to pepsi. Well, I guess that was lost in translation as I got now a call that BLNR is awaiting me.

The thing is that my heart is for pepsi and more concretely I really wasn't expecting this so I don't have the needed coin at hand.

I have been trying to figure out all the options I have, and have not settled yet which one.

1) sell some stocks/funds and keep the BLNR.
2) sell something I don't use and keep the BLNR
3) change hulk to some cheaper diver and keep the BLNR
4) flip BLNR
5) say to family no vacation this summer as daddy got new watch.

I cannot think proper replacement for GMT so it would be easier to replace a submariner. And I think I will flip the BLNR once I get the pepsi call, which won't happen this year.

I am also working on #3 - for example Tudor BBBB is trying to find a new home but these things are not as liquid as stocks..

What would you do in my situation?

Might help to know all the other watches you have that you’re willing to part with. Selling stuff you don’t use and keeping the BLNR definitely sounds like what I would do in this situation

There's another option: Since you say your heart really isn't longing for the BLNR anymore, let the allocation go to the next person on the waiting list.
Explain your decision to the dealer - they might be appreciative that you aren't a flipper and give you some consideration when their next Pepsi allocation arrives.

Just from someone who’s made the mistake (had twins had to buy a house etc etc) do not sell the Hulk! I did and went back to get one 3 years later ended up with GMT as the hulk had gone doo-lally price wise but it would have been my first choice!

Buy it,dont flip it,wear it and see the value in 10 years time .Much more than the flipping small change you will get now.

All my Rolexes I have sold,I should have kept, would have been worth much more now.

I'd wait for the one you want or get both.

It would be interesting if Rolex dropped the BLNR this year in favor of a SS Blueberry and added a WG Coke.

Regardless the BNLR is a great watch

Welcome to the forum

IMO it doesn’t sound like you want it or you’re ready for it, so I’d pass. Buy what you want when you’re ready

My current, rather limited collection contains:
- Hulk. Used 75% of the time, including nights
- Zenith 410. Used when wearing a suit. Basically workdays
- Tudor BBBB. Used when I feel like it, not very often though.

So there is definitely a place for a GMT, that's the reason why I put myself on the list. In addition to a proper dress watch and a beater diver.

I also asked the AD if I would get waiting list advance if I decline, answer was no.

In my mind, if you don't have the cash outright to purchase it without selling something else you can't afford it at this time.

I would put this on in the background

and then explain that vacation is cancelled.

Great idea. In the past, when I've passed when my AD offers me some hot or popular watch (because I really didn't want it regardless of whether it was popular or not), they usually follow up more even nicer options. They appreciate that I'm only going to buy a watch if I like it, not to do the annoying "catch and release" with a quick flip to make a few bucks.

Man that’s harsh... skipping family vacation to pay for a watch? I would think Rolex type purchases are for AFTER you’ve taken care of your family. Maybe you were joking, but seems pretty small.

Given your choices, I would say a combination of 1, 2, 5.

1: Markets have had a nice run and maybe time to book some profits.
2: Sell Zenith and Tudor to fund the BLNR.
5: Scale back family vacation plans.

However, since your hearts are with the Pepsi, I would skip BLNR and let the next person in line have it.

OP, I would not do this.

If you really want the BLRO and not feeling the BLNR, I'd explain the situation to the AD and see if they'll move you up the BLRO list for your generosity. If that doesn't work, I'd sell the Tudor since it doesn't get much wrist time. If that's not an option, I'd purchase and sell the BLNR. You won't have much trouble moving it. I'd hang on to it until after Basel because it will likely be in even more demand if it is, in fact, discontinued. If it's not discontinued, you still won't have any issue moving it quickly. Just my .02

I’d go this route. Buy it. Enjoy it. It’s just cash in a different form. When the other watch comes in flip it out. You’ll make money and essentially have a discounted Pepsi. Shout out to you for realizing how first world this is. I think a lot of us, me included, get caught in this hype.

I'd say tell them you want a Pepsi instead, and point out how they lost you in transition, but you'd appreciate that if they put you on Pepsi list instead. Maybe they will appreciate you aren't a flipper and feel a bit of responsibility of losing you in transition so you will get allocated one sooner.

I know we were planning a trip to the Maldives this year but what do you all think about a roadtrip!?

I would prefer the blnr to the LVc I think so I’d probably sell the LVc.

Buying to flip something you don’t want is what perpetuates the current gray market craziness.

I wouldn't sell stocks or sacrifice the family vacation.

Passing on it is probably what I would do unless you really think you can sell/get rid of things you don't want or need in time to get enough money to pay for it.

Or buy it and enjoy it until you get the call for the stainless BLRO. I wouldn't consider it flipping if you wear it and then decide to sell let's say over a year later--which it sounds like you think it'll be a bit.

Although the AD will not move you up if you decline, make sure they do not move you to the bottom of the list if you do buy. They may not want to get you a BLRO any time soon if you take the BLNR.
