My Collection....What would you change?

Hello All,

I have been collecting watches for some time now and have acquired 4 vintage Rolex sport models. Most were bought "right-time right-place" and I could afford them. I'm at a point where I would like to make them more "original".

They are....
6542 GMT 1958 No crown guard
1680 Submariner 1971
1675 GMT 1972 "root beer"
1675 GMT 1977 "ghost" (orig. black)

Any advise and commentary welcome!

Thank you,
Kert

Stunning collection and my choice would be if a change is made, select the least wrist time model.

Finding parts for the first gmt is going to be costly. Is that a relume? Hard to tell with the pic.

Getting some nice matching hands for the ghost will be the easiest. Same for the root beer.

Red sub looks great in my rookie eyes.

You might have more sound advice in the vintage forum.

Nice set, going for more originality would be the way I would go and you can certainly take your time with that.

Not a relume but a replacement bezel unfortunately. My presumption is a replacement dial but I have no way of knowing. Maybe someone on here can tell. The Ghost is interesting because the original owner I bought it from said he never changed anything and I believe he never cleaned it either....it was disgusting...crud that I bet was 30 years of build-up.

Excellent collection ! If a change is necessary, please, only by addition and no subtraction.

I think there are much better judges of what the original watch was....for example did the 1675 come with a black dial in 1977? What hands did the root beer come with? I am a watch lover but by no means an expert.

Hi Kert,

You have a lovely collection of some of the most resired vintages out there.

I guess "what to change" depends on your end goal and how much you want to put into the pieces...not only money but time as well.

I think most of what I would do would center around the 6542. As you know the hand set is a later replacement. Period correct can be had with pricing in line with condition, but $$$ any way you look at it.

The bezel, of course is not the original, and the cost of a bakelite is almost over the moon and consideration has to be given to the fragility of the original if the watch is to be worn. Personally I'd probably leave as is.

The dial looks as if it could be a latter replacement that was used in the 80's. Hard to tell from the pic. Original gilt dials I guess can be had, but again cost is a major factor.

Good luck.

Would sell the 2 1675's to loving homes and try for a 1665, but that's just me :)

Other than changing ownership from yours to mine.... I'd keep it as is, and add to it!

Nice, but too many Rolex and too many GMTs!

I would keep the sub and one GMT, probably the Pepsi and experiment with some other brands. There is life beyond Rolex!

I don't think I'll get rid of any. I just want to change up a few hands and clean them up a bit to get them back towards original. I do want to ad DRSD but so many have been altered its hard to trust sellers and with box and papers they are hard to find.

I love the new 42mm in red/rose. I have other yellow gold so I have not opted to go that way in Rolex.

Fair enough! I just saw the partial list of you collection and can see why a day date hasn't made it's way in yet. How often do you rotate watches?

Good choice if you want to stay Rolex. Nautilus or Aquanaut from Patek could also be an option
