What was the “vision” and expectations Baselworld was not living up to?

These words of his, are worth quoting!

"But life evolves constantly, things change and people change as well… We constantly have to adapt ourselves, question what we do, since what was right yesterday may not necessarily be valid today! "

Not a huge surprise and hopefully the new show will be better than Basel with more access to watches.

Wouldn’t provide full refunds for this year’s show (30-40% only). The new January 2021 dates weren’t discussed with exhibitors as they conflict with other events. Also Baselworld tried to charge an additional 15% if exhibitors wanted to roll their space from this year to next year’s exhibit.

Obviously nobody on this forum knows what Rolex and company are going to do re: 2020 model releases.

But you would sure think, with a new trade show debuting in April of ‘21, Rolex would not release new models in mid to late 2020, just months before their new FHH based show.

Seems the writing is on the wall to shelve any releases until April of next year.

Exactly this, the old fashion show was irrelevant

Interestingly, it seems it is going to go the opposite way. Per Hodinkee:

Two things stand out from the FHH announcement. One is that the decision to form the new show was initiated by Rolex, which has long been a major supporter of Baselworld. The other is that the event will not have a strong consumer element that Baselworld's new management is emphasizing in its repositioning of its show. "This new event," the FHH said, "will be geared predominantly towards retailers, the press and VIP customers." The FHH noted that other brands might join the new show.

Seems there will be less access; not more.

Welp that’s that. Sad to see the end of Basel world but excited to see this new platform that Rolex is using to release new models

I disagree with the logic of a cancel or next year release of new Rolex models. You have to think Rolex spent millions on brochures, machine retooling, etc. Rolex must have been making the new models since January. They must have lots of inventory of new models and when they reopen, machines are set to make new models. They have to release this year...if not in summer. Just my opinion.

Obviously we will see. I’m not saying you’re wrong. I would just be surprised if they “step on” their new trade show by releasing models 5-6 months before this brand new - and clearly hyped - event.

Could it happen? Sure. I would just personally expect they roll everything into this new FHH debut.

Yes, looks unlikely they will release anything new this year now, certainly not a new model, but it's possible they compromise and quietly release a new dial or strap this summer/fall as they have before.

First it was Austin Kaye now Baselworld. Those who have been on the hobby for a long time will miss those names for different reasons.

Baselworld did not help themselves with the high cost for the brands and for the people attending, with extremely high hotel and restaurant pricing etc.. So I have read.
