I almost bought a Submariner...

... off of another forum. Why? Well, because I was bored. And so I used watchrecon to find subs for sale, found a nice one on WUS and emailed the seller. He responds, I reply, he responds. Not particularly forthcoming, a bit of an attitude he has, but no flags were raised.

But as you all know, there are approximately 147 million Rolex Submariners out in the world, but Rolex only made 5 million. Yeah, I made that up. But there are an awful lot of fakes, and they are getting really, really good. One can buy from a TS here on TRF, but one will pay a substantial premium for that. The only way to really know that it's real is to buy new, but if you want a 14060M (like I think I do) then you don't have that option.

So this morning I decided to further pursue the sale and emailed the seller and I was going to post some of the pictures here on our "is it fake" forum, and I couldn't find the FS thread. So I look for past posts by the seller, and he's been banned. So they banned him and deleted the thread. Natch they won't tell me why. Privacy. Bah.

Looks like I dodged a bullet there. I guess it wasn't meant to be. But I got really scared thinking about the likelihood of a fake. I've never had an issue buying a used Rolex in the past, although I did get a fake Breitling once which I was fortunately able to return as the seller had no idea it was faked, and he wanted to maintain his excellent eBay feedback rating.

I’ve seen a number 14060Ms come up recently from accounts that have been hacked. Not sure if that’s a new thing or what. Fact is, I would spend as much time researching the seller as I would the watch.

Lesson learned and glad you didn’t get scammed.

I guess that why they are called trusted sellers ... and worth the premium IMHO

The peace of mind and the time savings alone is worth any premium to me

Yeah... but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around spending 7-8K on an old watch with scratches and needing a service. So finding a nice one, appearing hardly worn for $6500 seemed like a bargain. Of course, it's no bargain if it's not real.

Glad you avoided the scam, OP. I had pretty good transactions with trusted sellers here on the forum. With the forum population being pretty informed, the prices are competitive, IMO.

Yup, always have to be vigilant and I’m glad it worked in your favor this time. I bought a Sub from a great trustworthy guy on this forum, you may know him. Still love the Sub by the way with it getting the majority of wrist time. So some good and a lot of bad out there. Take care.

I am looking for a 114060 and notice one guy is selling it on facebook group with a decent price, but I am new to Rolex, so I can't tell if it is fake. hard decision.

As is said time and again, first buy the seller. GL!

Geez, what a sad state of affairs...I miss the old days when a good fake was easy to spot ten feet away...

That would’ve been an expensive cure for boredom...

Maybe take up OTB to spend that spare change burning a hole in your pocket?
