Best Patek Chrono Under 100k?....
What is everyone's thoughts? The 5170P looks pretty incredible but might be right around that price or slightly above. If you could only have one dress watch chrono, which would you pick?

Personally, my money would be for a 5270g, seen them around 100k on Moda, a lot of bang for your buck there.

Having owned the 5170g… I would choose the aquanaut

Not including PCC, I would choose 5170J to fit the bill. Can probably get the J and G and be close to staying near budget!

5172G blue or 5170G black dial. I own the former and have handled the latter. Dialside it’s sporty vs classic. Case makes the difference. A little nicer on the 5172

I think the 3935a is a promising contestant for that title as well. Chrono, steel for everyday use, gorgeous dial, strap monster that makes it a great watch for dressing up or down, and the famous worldtime function.

5170P.
I also like the quirky 5975 with 5975P black the clear winner but above your budget. The other metals would work easily though. If sports was included I'd say 5968A albeit slightly above your budget as well. |

if you can bump budget up a bit go 5070P
If not 5170 can be had at a great price

I think 5070G is the right answer if you can pull off a 42mm case. Otherwise I'd go with a 5170 (G or R).

Absolutely agree. The decision to go with the 5170P was made a lot easier b/c the 5070 & 5172s all wear too large for me. (The 5170G pulsometer dial calls to me, though!)

5170P if you can get below 100k. New/mint condition of this watch is going for around 100k, and you can definitely get one for slightly below 100k if you are patient.
I recently bought the 5172G blue dial. I love it and it's less dressy than the 5170p, and you can definitely make it more dressy by putting a shiny navy alligator strap on it. Currently market price is slightly below 60k for a one that is in new/mint condition. I was able to get a new one for 55k about a month ago. |

Let me offer a totally different perspective for "the best" sub $100K chrono. I'll offer up the 5960G, or 5960P-016.
1. It's the first automatic in house chrono made by Patek, so the movement is at least nominally important. 2. It has multiple complications other than the flyback chrono, i.e., annual calendar, day/night indicator and power reserve. For me, more complications = cooler watch. 3. It it automatic, which I think is a plus. 4. The G has the lovely tasti tondi pushers, and the P-016 was only produced for a year. 5. It's not huge at 40.5mm. |

For a dress watch, one of the manual wind chronos from the 5170/5172 would work. If you have a larger wrist, the 5905 may be another option if you want an automatic chrono. From the older collections you have the 5070 and 5960 series as well.

For consideration.
Some of the newer chronos have the ability for 60 minute timing vs 30 minutes (the typical Chrono standard.) For me the 60 minutes are much more useful vs the 30 simply because my frame of reference for timekeeping can easily be in doubt of ~15 minutes or ~45 minutes has passed. The 60 minute counter takes away my doubt and common loss of time. This could just be the result of using the 60 minute timing bezel of a sub for 20 years of timing things. Nonetheless that is now how I am wired.
