Should I buy a vintage Rolex-Never serviced.
Hi all,
I am looking at buying a 25 year old sub that has never been serviced. Is this a good or bad idea. If I brought the watch to an AD would they be able to take a look at the movement and tell me if it has been damaged? Thanks |

and AD with a good watchmaker on site would be able to do that...
or a certified watchmaker in your area.... my guess is they would charge from 50usd-70usd to have a look...

Well, I have a 1601 that the seller knew nothing about. I had my watch repair man take it apart and look at everything and then he gave me a report on it which in my case was a clean bill of health. So you need to have it fully looked at before you buy it for two reasons, one to see if it all authentic Rolex and what state the movement is in. Then you can talk money to the seller.

IMO you should negotiate the price of a full service into the price of the watch, then you start of with a "new" piece.

I would love to find a 25 year old Sub that has never been serviced...
That would mean that, likely, the hands, dial, and bracelet are original to the watch as well as the insides.. I would leave it to my RSC to sort out a movement overhaul and leave all else as is..........

Depends. Does it run? Is it a reference you always wanted? Gotta a good watchmaker with a Rolex parts account? Willing to pay for a service? Then hell yes.

Non-serviced means that you don't have to worry that anyone unqualified has messed around with it!

I agree with the "depends..." It depends on what kind of watch it is, the condition (i.e. does it run?), value/price, etc. If you think it just needs a cleaning, and no major overhaul, then factor in about $600 for a standard service at a Rolex Service Center (or independent watchmaker).

I only buy vintage from my trusted dealer cum watchmaker as I can trust him to tell me whether the piece has been overhauled or not prior being put on display shelf. But caveat emptor applies
