How Do Perpetual Calendars Hold Their Value?

Hi y’all. I’m curious to hear folks thoughts on how RO PCs typically hold their value. There are so few on the market that it’s hard to see what they actually sell for. I’m not interested in watches as investments, but rather I’d like to decide between buying new vs waiting for a nice used one as to not take a huge hit as it looks like they typically trade for under retail. It’s also not clear why there’s not much demand around these compared to other watches around the same price range on the secondary markets, like 5711 and 5712, etc.

They die....tbe reality is do u really need to spend such a premium above an AC for a days inconvenience every year? I guess a PC is more about the horological aspect of why it's in a collection. I love mine but know it's a huge loss leader

Not great. Very few appreciate horological complications. For value retention you want the strongest brand, the biggest icon and the lowest price.

Almost double compared to a basic RO.

Definitely does not hold since some references especially PM are sold way below MSRP.

I’m referring to the RO PC, which I’d consider a sports watch still.

Generally don't hold well.

HOWEVER, I feel like they bottom out at a better place than less complicated pieces. For example, a perp calendar will always be worth something significant. Currently, it's tough to find even steel perpetual calendars under $10k that's less than 20 years old. And that's a pretty steady mark, versus you can find automatic three handers for peanuts.

If you are chasing that value retention monster (which I don't advise), look at the merits a particular model has. All APs will bottom out somewhere, all perp cals bottom out somewhere, all precious metal pieces bottom out somewhere, look at all the individual merits, aggregate them and evaluate.

But, like I said, I don't suggest that. Find something you like or love, and forget all the market stuff. Nirvana in this hobby is finding something you can't stop thinking about and no one else can understand exactly why. And you got to pay to play.

It depends. Steel / Blue and Ceramic holds well. I expect the skeleton perpetual ceramic to do very well indeed.

All the ceramic models are well above msrp in the secondary market and (in theory) it’ll be impossible to see any scratches hah!

The SS blue floor is around $50k these days on the very low end and PMs bottom out in the mid 70s. All not terrible in grand scheme of things

I agree the steel/blue and ceramic hold their value better than other PC references. I'm hoping that I get approved for one next year. Buy what you like and more importantly wear what you buy. Life is too short to worry about value retention if you love the watch and cant stop thinking about it.
