know your enemy,1680 fakes are running rampant!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and I suspect many of these fakes are sitting unnoticed in quite a few colections as we speak! these 1680's have genuine dials and movements and the case appears authentic to the untrained eye.. this one was sent to me as genuine and within the firsat 5 minutes I knew it was a fake.. first give away was that the standard caseback tool worked but was slightly too large for this caseback and didnt grab right..now I knew something wasnt right at that moment..a caseback would have to be majorly worn down to have that much play, and this one didnt appear worn down..next I checked the serial number and reference..dear lord,I should have noticed that immediately..look at the center line of the "E"s in reg design first off..they are even with upper and lower line.. the center line should always be shorter than the top and the bottom line. then the depth and quality of the engraving was the next give away..nowhere near Rolex quality! and the topping on the cake was the inside caseback.the stamping Is just way too undefined and double stamped, not to mention again too shallow. hopefully this little info will aid collectors and dealers alike to double check their inventory! this one came from a dealer, and I hope at least he had no clue... |

Superb info Steve. Thanks for sharing.

SNAP!!!! Thanks Steve, they are getting better every day....Pretty soon we won't be able to trust anyone but those here who are in the know. I wouldn't trust and AD either nowadays, they have been known to sell fakes as well..

I could own that for years and never know. Was the movement Rolex or ETA? Was it just the case?
As I read your post, they took an authentic movt, dial and hands and recased in a fake 1680 case to boost the value? (sort of like adding antifreeze to Qualitatswein to make Spaetlese - a practise unscrupulous winemakers do in Germany and Austria)

so with a cursory inspection it would appear 100% genuine.. someone was saying about even AD's selling fakes. I went into an authorized dealer last week and he had a few Rolex bracelets in his case (used) and among them priced just as all the rest was a fake band..and not a good fake at that!..lol so your 100% correct, these authorized dealers know nothing when it comes to vintage or even classic watches! |

Thanks for the heads up Steve, I've heard that there are a few vintage fakes running around the genuine parts, pretty scary when buying a vintage these days they will need dismantling to prove authenticity
Will keep an ear to the ground!

Thanks for the information Steve, I hate all of the fakes on the market today. It makes me frightened to ever buy a vintage piece, except here on TRF of course!

The whole Rolex thing has me on nails about my father’s watch since it was given to me. He has had it since the early 70’s and still it managed to get an aftermarket bezel ring. Still puzzled about the dial. Very nerve-racking. I wonder how many stay away from Rolex because of the treat of getting scammed.

I was saying to some people the other day, that it's so easy and easy profit making to fake the Red subs and double Red Dwellers both this way and others now that i wouldn't buy one unless it had full paperwork and history. Just not worth it. Unless you don't mind it not being original or pay a lot less because it is not 100% original.

Thanks for taking the time to post the photos and information, Steve. It makes all of us better buyers and sellers. The scary thing is that soon enough, the forgers will figure out the little details like the fonts, etc. and determining authenticity will be almost impossible for an average enthusiast.
