Do you keep the chronometer on your Rolex Daytona running all the time?

Greetings,

After roughly two months of wearing my Daytona, I find that I prefer to leave the chronometer running full time, mostly because I like to see the larger second hand running rather than looking at the much smaller sub-dial second hand. I teach SCUBA as a side hobby, and it is much easier to time student skills underwater with the larger second hand.

How about you? Chronometer running full time or off unless you need it?

Joe

I think you meant to say "Chronograph" not Chronometer.

No harm in letting it run, other then it will tax your power reserve. It may also push your watch to a faster service then if you didn't allow it to continually run. At least that's what I've been told by more then one Rolex certified Watch Makers / Repair guys.

Rolex UK confirmed it does no harm, power reserve reduction minimal, but suggested a service at 7 years rather than 10, assuming no other issues.

I did indeed. The Daytona is certified by COSC so it is a chronometer, but the stopwatch function is referred to as a chronograph. I actually had to look this up because I conflated the two terms, essentially thinking that they were one and the same. Thanks for the gentle correction.

Have to agree a chronometer is just any movement thats been certified by the Swiss COSC,while a chronograph is movement that can be used as a timing stopwatch. But cannot see any point in using the chronograph function if its not needed to time something.

I use the chronograph when I need to time something, the regular second hand is fine for everything else.

I rarely use my chrono function. Usually just to make sure it still works.

I use my iPhone chrono function, way easier than trying to unscrew/screw back the Daytona pushers while wearing the watch.

The 4130 movement has a vertical clutch and column wheel, so the wear is far less than traditional chronograph movements. Plus, the 72-hour power reserve is with the chrono running. It's a few hours longer with it disengaged.

If I can manage to get one on my wrist this year, I'll probably let it run all the time unless I actually need to time something. Using the chrono hand as a large second hand has merit.

But, until then... bacon.

I have many chronographs, and use them. There I don’t keep them running for the heck of it.

Why would you leave it on all the time for no reason?

Some people like the sweep second hand it provides. But no, I keep the chronograph stopped unless timing something; I do keep the pushers unscrewed so I can use the timer quickly when the desire strikes.

I personally would never let the chronograph run all the time. It promotes wear and really makes no sense to me. It is running but not timing anything. If you desire a center seconds sweep buy a watch with that function would be my suggestion.

In can run concurrently without damage to movement, only lessen power reserve.
Unfortunately it is not a flyback and there’s a separate seconds counter thus leaving it running is rather useless.

I only used mine when timing something. The rest of the time left it frozen.

As said above, with the vertical clutch, wear and accuracy are not very affected, if at all.

I do both and stick to one for a while so I can just leave the pushers screwed down.
