Rolex Price Drop = Less Target for Thieves?
I see many threads where people are hesitant to wear hyped and desirable watches in certain parts of the world because of theft. Do you anticipate the thefts to get less as the prices of Rolex on the secondary market continue to drop - or do you think the robberies will continue as long as there is a secondary market? Maybe I am just looking for a silver lining to the decrease in watch prices?

No, even if they drop to 1/2 of MSRP that’s still a nice payday as opposed to working for money.

Not as long as “predators” only get a slap on the wrist, if caught.

This horrible theft trend will be unfortunately getting worse and not slowing down.

Even if they get thousand dollars for the watch it is still ok for them. After all they didn’t pay for the watch.

Whether it's worth $19,000 or $12,000 isn't less of a motivator.

No.
It would be hugely beneficial if Grey dealers refused to buy stock that exclused the original box and papers. |

I've owned my GMT Master for 40 years. It was gifted to me by my father who bought it new about 10 years prior. The box and papers had no value to him. It was the watch he valued. He did keep the box; but it was a catch-all for stuff. Papers tossed or lost long before the watch came to me. I do have the box; found it in his things after he passed. It's in rough shape, and no way to prove that it belongs to my watch. So if I, or my kids if they inherit it, wanted or needed to sell the watch, how could that be done if a "full set" is required? I don't think your suggestion is economically realistic. |
