I did a weird but good thing

Hey everyone! So I did a weird thing but it needed to happen. When I was furloughed from work for a month I traded my OP39 for a DJ41 from a gray dealer that is my friend. It was beautiful but I couldn't get over having a pre-owned DJ41 from Japan. Other one of my good friends families owns Razny Jewelers so I called him in hopes he was getting in the same exact watch just brand new and all mine plus the good experience. I got the call almost right away to come and see him. He took the trade in for a good deal and I literally bought the same watch except it is all mine. The experience from buying from the AD who is also a friend was amazing. Being something that is a milestone for me I wanted it all in my name. Has anyone else ever done that? Happy 4th to everyone too!

Seems like a waste of money to me but whatever makes you happy is all that matters.

I guess being a milestone I just wanted the experience and to be mine. The stay at home purchase was not thought out very well on my part but I got a good trade value and it made sense.

So Rolex AD buying experience > owning a Rolex? How much money did you spend?

So you sold a watch to buy an exactly same watch ? .. what do you mean it's yours now, and what was the issue with the original watch.

Lol. What a strange post. I dont understand the message or value of this post.

Out of pocket $1700. I loved the experience and my friends family owns the jeweler and now if I ever want something else from them I have a purchase history. It was all worth it for me.

I understand. Its like a new car. You don't have to worry about how it was treated or where it's been.

IMO Nothing beats a new watch with your name on the card. Enjoy!

I know it is not a normal thing, we do silly things when locked up in our homes for over a month! It did all work out in the end and I have nothing but joy when i look at it. It is my only one and will eventually be passed down so all of it was important! I hope you all have a great 4th!

By all means do whatever makes you happy. To me that money spent on a brief moment in time could have gone to a new pc, or 75" Sammy, or into an interest bearing account to pay for the RSC service down the road. Some value experience over tangible possessions.

Why would you need a purchase history if your friend owns the store? Very confusing thread indeed

I totally get what you did. Sometimes you have buyers remorse. It happens. Looks like everything worked out...

I’m with you. I feel the same way. I’ve bought from trusted grays here, great experience, but it was not the same for me. I much prefer to be the only owner, and buying from an AD I know. Having my name on a local warranty card is a nice to have and preferred. I plan to pass these pieces down and for me, that adds to the piece.

If the watch you had was complete and in great condition, I would never have traded out of it for the same watch and lose $1700 in the process. I would have saved the new watch buying experience for another watch down the road. But they say this is a hobby so might as well be happy with it.

Agree, if it make the watch 'yours' and you are able and willing to pay for it, why not

$1700 just to have your name on the warranty card?!
If it was that important, why not set out buying brand new from the start?

Each to their own I guess!

You enjoyed the experience, that’s all that should matter to you. No need to get any group consensus or strangers’ opinions. Congrats on your brand new watch

I’m not into vintage or used watches so yes, when I buy I buy new from AD.
While in some cases, buying used may save some money it will never provide the peace of mind that to me is priceless.

Nothing in this hobby truly makes sense, honestly.

If you’ve never had the retail experience, I can understand. My first Rolex was new from an AD. Once is enough. I like saving money.

Its been years since I was able to save money buying a Rolex.. These days, buying from an AD is the only way if you can buy for MSRP!!

True, mostly. The pieces I’ve gotten recently aren’t hard to find at a decent price, since they aren’t hot models.
