Precious Metal Daytonas in 2024?

While I've always respected the Daytona, I never got into the hype...until I tried on a friend's Daytona on an Oysterflex. It was the most comfortable watch that I've ever worn, topping my 5164A. I'm now thinking about getting into the market for a WG or RG Daytona.

I know the 1265XX have come out only very recently so supply is still constrained, but hopefully with the watch bubble popping (an AD where I have no purchase history offered me a WG YM 42 over the weekend), is it even fathomable to get a PM Daytona within 1-2 years? It seems like there's currently a pretty big premium on C24 vs MSRP for PM Daytonas so curious to get this board's thoughts.

You should be able to get this watch during that time frame. Really the only hard PM Daytonas to get are the LeMans and the platinum one.

I bought a WG on oysterflex in December after being on a list for one for about 14 months.

Before the hype era PM Daytonas were readily available, usually lingering in the case. They’re expensive thus limiting the market. They were amongst the last watches that were in the cases until around 2020.
All this to see when the initial rush off a new model subsides I think they will be relatively easy to pick up from an AD. Ask for a specific reference and I bet you’ll get one in a reasonable timeframe.

I would think this would be a reasonable watch to obtain in short order unless you are looking for something specific or collectable.

The public may be starting to realize that 30K or more for a watch is a good bit of money. If so, the availability of PM models should improve at ADs.

One of my good friends only waited six months for a PM Daytona .He has a decent history with AD only several years. It's definitely a good time to ask for one. They are very comfortable! Good luck!

I’ve been asking for a PM Daytona on Oysterflex for over a year. In that time period I was able to get an SS sub, SS GMT BLNR, and RG DD but no Daytona. Still holding out hope though, but after waiting so long going grey seems tempting.

I think that’s ambitious, (OP stated no purchase history) depending on exact PM Daytona configuration.

The WG version is not easy to get all, along with other super popular dials.

FWIW, having just gotten the 116519LN from my AD prior to W&W 2023 (I wasn’t sure what would happen to proportions, etc.), I now think the 126519LN is far better looking/superior.

The indices are better and Glidelock.

I prefer the dial design of the 126 vs the 116 but that's totally subjective. The inclusion of Glidelock on the 126 is objectively better IMO. I'm going to limit my search to the 126 series only.

Thanks all for the feedback thus far. Seems like mixed opinions about likelihood of getting one...

What's considered collectable? My top choice would be WG with the black dial. Second choice would likely be the RG with the black dial as well.

True--depends on the market I guess. I would cast a wide net and request it from as many AD's in the area and see what happens.

I just picked up this RG Daytona from my AD a couple of weeks ago after a little over a 4 month wait. Granted, I have a good relationship with my AD but I think supply might be getting better or demand down (as they are on the expensive side). I wish you all the luck in getting yours. It's an awesome watch and just love mine.

I finally started a relationship with an authorized dealer here in SoCal. I have my preferred grey dealer here that I go through normally.

But I said screw it. I’m not gonna wait, so I have mine coming on Friday. Plus, I want the Sundust dial and I know that one’s even harder to get especially with zero purchase history.

My goal is that I’m still going to build my relationship and possibly buy some items from the AD. Ultimately if I get a piece I already have, maybe I will just sell it to a friend.

I’m not patient, life is too short, but I can understand why many of you would wait. The premium was high not waiting for my AD and could understand why that doesn’t make sense for most people.

I just got a rose gold Daytona on OF on a walk in. Things are getting better for the higher end pieces.

I think location and size of market are going to be factors.

I asked my AD about one and the answer I got was, "patience was key."

I always hear these stories and happy for people that have this success. However there are way more people waiting multiple months or years… as I said. Already started relationship with my AD so if I get lucky and get a call for it… I’ll still swoop it up. In the meantime I’ll be wearing it.

Calabasas. And I got a TT Daytona from Gearys without even really requesting one.

In a major metro in California so obviously more demand, but more supply hopefully as well.

Sounds like they just have people they like over others.

I’m in the Irvine area. I think there’s only South Coast Plaza, Fashion Island, and one in the Brea Mall.

Mine came from Gearys. Just under a year. While there are a fair number of AD/Boutique sources, there are literally thousands of Rolex consumers. Tough to get great pieces. They tell me the WG Oysterflex is not that common. Stopped by the boutique today and asked if my LeMans had come in yet. At least there was a chuckle instead of “no Rolex for you”. The manager said he won’t see one …..ever in his store.
