Same here. I've always loved the look of the Daytona, but it wears like a ladies watch. Way too small, and desperately needed to be bulked up a bit.

If there is such a problem with the size or look of the Daytona then why is it the most popular Rolex sport watch by far? They've definitely made the new Daytona look more like a Sub or Yachtmaster and less like a Daytona with the ring around the bezel and more slab sided look. For those of us that already have Subs and GMTs and want the Daytona to be different, more dressy and sleek the new one is a total fail. For those who don't have all of these pieces and want a Daytona that has more of a bulky presence on the wrist....the new one might have more appeal. I personally think the new Daytona looks dreadful compared to the 116500. Smaller watches are in right now and the previous Daytona was a sport Rolex that fit a niche that is evolving in it's direction. Now the newer one?....less so.

Pretty much directed to vintage lovers. Happy days.

Haven’t liked the Daytona, but the new one really has me interested. I’m happy with the changes, still don’t like the now old version.

I'm interested in the new Daytona. Looks nicer, a bit larger and more legible. Reserve final judgement till I see one in the metal.

I have come full circle. The previous Daytona was special. The bezel stood out vs the case. The new is just like every other SS sports Rolex. Congrats to the previous Daytona owners!

They fixed most of what was wrong with it….lugs are now symmetrical, bit larger case size, dial is a little less crowded. Home run….fish fingers out

 Agree 100%. No more silly asymmetric lugs, sharper and cleaner dial, vintage looking bezel ring, and a new case shape that will (hopefully) make it wear a little larger. Love it.

This

Great point.

I love those photos!!!
I prefer that now 'vintage' model, the movement has been rock solid and the bezel dial and case were fine...but Rolex employees had to do something to make it 'new' so this is what we get....:crying:

Onikage 2 April 2023 02:37 PM

Love it. Brushed lug tops would have been the icing. Now eveyone's Daytona looks like a $400 fake. Hahaha! Kidding, kidding.

Love my 116500s, both acquired from ADs late 2022 (blessed). Waited 13 years for white dial.

there is something wrong with my eyes. i think i see protective stickers on your case and bracelet :dummy:

I'm probably in the minority but I actually like them both equally. I like the hour markers and the crown guards on the new one and the subdials and the bezel (without the steal around it) on the old one. All in all they are still very similar and would be happy with either. I'll stick with the previous reference because thats what I have in white. Might be cool to get the black one from the new reference and have both.

I look forward to the direct comparison between the new and previous Generation by whoever posts it first here:cheers:

you will all buy it. trust me i know you. same story every year.

I am not sure why everyone has a problem with the metal surrounding the ceramic bezel on the new Daytona...don't the current GMT and Sub have ceramic bezels with a metal surround?

cdm765 3 April 2023 09:49 AM

The new Daytona looks much better…

No not like a lower cosmetic trim plate. The Sub/GMT has to have a metal raised machined teeth as it is a functional turning piece. Apples vs Oranges.

What about the explorer 2? It's got that metal polished outline for the bezel, looks same as this daytona to my eye - is that a separate piece on the exp 2 in which the metal bezel insert sits? Or all 1 piece?

I like the new one more, but thread reminds me of this lol

So Rolex treated the 116500LN like Sonny at the toll booth?

When Rolex released the 12XXXX Submariners, they uniformly made improvements in all aspects compared to the previous model. Definitely not the case with the Daytona. The steel ring interrupting the edge of the bezel does not look like a means to better protect the bezel from impacts, it looks like logistical corner-cutting to economize on the expense/difficulty/skill/labor required to have a full "infinity" edge using a more delicate material like ceramic. Agreed with Mystro that it's a step down in visual effect & aesthetics. Strange how Rolex could drop the ball so hard like this, given their obvious capability & previous display of good judgment on the evolution of their other sports models.

tekno 4 April 2023 12:07 PM

The Daytona was ruined when they started using ceramic for the bezel.

The new one looks a lot better, but I can't say in person yet

I think the ring change frames the bezel quite nicely. This seems like a sacred cow.

New one LOOKS better and IS better in every way. So tired of the prior models’ bag holders whining about the new model which in this case was executed perfectly. I am the proud owner of the prior white gold blue dial Daytona (116509) and I am very much looking forward to purchasing the new platona..

Love the new touches, all of them, love the new movement. Nice soft update.

Also LOVE the new yellow gold GMT. Wow. :dude:

How did you come up with the conclusion that it is logistically more complicated to manufacture one over the other?
